Schreiber’s fifth-anniversary retrospective dates the initial system to January 2016 and the New York launch to September 21, with 97 customers on day one. Some processes behind its conversational interface remained manual.[3]
2019–2020European expansion
Lemonade entered Germany in June 2019, the Netherlands in 2020 and France with renters insurance on December 8, 2020. Its European headquarters is in Amsterdam under Dutch central-bank supervision. The expansion included its plain-language Policy 2.0 contracts.[4]
2020public listing
Lemonade listed on the New York Stock Exchange on July 2, 2020, entering public capital markets while continuing to expand beyond its original New York renters-insurance business.[4]
2020pet health insurance
On July 15, 2020, Lemonade introduced health insurance for cats and dogs in 33 U.S. states. Optional preventive care and expanded coverage supplemented the product, which could be bundled with home or renters insurance.[5]
2021claims videos and AI controversy
After controversy over its reference to nonverbal cues in claims videos, Lemonade said it did not use emotion recognition to detect fraud or let AI automatically deny claims. It described face matching as flagging repeated identities for human review. That explanation did not resolve the separate legal dispute over biometric-data collection.[6][7]
2021car insurance launch
On November 3, 2021, Lemonade unveiled Lemonade Car in Illinois. The product linked mileage and driving behavior with roadside assistance and claims management. Its internal Blender system automated administrative steps while claims teams continued to handle customer needs.[8]
2022Metromile acquisition
Lemonade completed its all-stock acquisition of pay-per-mile insurer Metromile on July 28, 2022. The transaction brought automotive data, staff and regulated operations, including data from roughly 500 million trips and an insurer licensed in 49 states. Those licenses did not mean Lemonade Car was already sold in all 49 states.[9]
2022biometric-data settlement
The Illinois Clarke litigation concerned biometric collection from claims videos between June 25, 2019 and May 27, 2021. A $4 million settlement received final approval on August 25, 2022 and required deletion of previously collected biometric data. Lemonade denied wrongdoing; the settlement did not establish liability on the merits.[7][10]
2022United Kingdom launch
On October 3, 2022, Lemonade launched contents insurance in the United Kingdom through a strategic partnership with Aviva, adding Britain to its U.S. and continental European markets.[11]
2026second-quarter scale and losses
At June 2026, Lemonade had about 3.31 million customers and $1.4343 billion in annualized in-force premium, distinct from revenue. Quarterly revenue was $294.4 million and net loss $43.4 million. Free cash flow was negative $8 million; adjusted free cash flow of positive $18.8 million included $26.8 million in net financing. Positive fourth-quarter adjusted EBITDA remained guidance.[12]

2026Florida car-insurance expansion
Lemonade Car launched in Florida on August 26, 2026. The company said its available states together represented nearly half of the U.S. car-insurance market. That described the size of those markets, not Lemonade’s own market share.[15]
2026quote-platform data settlement
A separate data-disclosure case alleged unauthorized access to information including driver’s-license data through the quote platform between April 2023 and September 18, 2024. The settlement established a $10.5 million fund and credit monitoring. A Southern District of New York court approved it on September 10, 2026, expressly without an admission of wrongdoing or liability.[16][17]
October 2026discounts for older Tesla hardware
On October 8, 2026, Lemonade extended its FSD-mile discount to Tesla Hardware 3: 30% off miles using FSD (Supervised) v14 Lite in Arizona, Colorado and Tennessee. The announcement specified 50% for Hardware 4 using FSD v14.2 or later. With customer permission, Tesla’s Fleet API distinguishes FSD from manually driven miles.[18]
October 2026eligibility and driver responsibility
The product page specifies 2019-or-newer Hardware 3 cars with firmware 2026.20.6.11 or later, and Hardware 4 firmware 2025.44.25.5 or later. Discounts apply to eligible FSD miles; manual miles retain ordinary rates, alongside a base charge. Coverage and claims rules remain unchanged. FSD still requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous.[19][18]
October 2026geographic limits
In October 2026, the FAQ listed car insurance in 12 states, including Florida and California. FSD discounts had narrower availability: Hardware 4 in Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Missouri, Oregon and Tennessee; Hardware 3 only in Arizona, Colorado and Tennessee.[20]
Business approach and Giveback
The founders present Lemonade as an attempt to rebuild insurance around digital products, long-term growth and social goals. It is a for-profit public benefit corporation with separate B Corp certification. Giveback directs eligible leftover premiums toward causes selected by customers, subject to board discretion and financial conditions rather than a guaranteed donation.[21][2][20]
Underwriting and agency roles
Lemonade-branded policies do not all share one underwriter. Its legal disclosures distinguish its property insurers, Homesite underwriting for some home policies, Banner Life underwriting for life products sold through its agency, and Home State County Mutual for Texas car insurance. Coverage depends on the product, jurisdiction and policy terms.[2]
