Key facts
2012–2017Education
He received Augsburg’s computer-science Diplom in May 2012, then pursued doctoral research there. In 2015 he moved to Tübingen’s Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and Bernstein Center, graduating in 2017.[1]
2017Unite the People
He co-authored CVPR 2017’s Unite the People with Javier Romero, Michael J. Black and colleagues. Its UP-3D dataset combines 3D body-model fitting, human screening and 2D predictor training to connect image annotations with 3D human representations.[2]
2017–2019Career
He joined Bodylabs in September 2017, before Amazon acquired it, then Facebook Reality Labs in March 2019.[1]
2021Pulsar
With Michael Zollhöfer, he developed Pulsar, an oral presentation at CVPR 2021. The differentiable renderer represents scenes with spheres and combines a rendering engine with neural shading to optimize 3D scenes from image observations.[3]
2022Neural Assets
The December 2022 preprint Neural Assets, co-authored with Aljaz Bozic, Denis Gladkov and Luke Doukakis, investigates volumetric capture and interactive rendering of real objects. It converts a feature-grid representation and small neural network into shader code for integration with existing mesh scenes.[4]
2023Neural Lens Modeling
For the CVPR 2023 paper Neural Lens Modeling, he worked with Wenqi Xian, Aljaz Bozic and Noah Snavely on a differentiable model of lens distortion and vignetting. It supports camera calibration and refinement of lens parameters during 3D reconstruction.[5]
Teams
He led Epic Games and Meta Reality Labs Research teams.[6]
September 2025TED Talk
At TEDAI Vienna, he described audience–model co-creation as “Content 3.0”: interactive characters and evolving stories, an early medium with potentially higher per-viewer generation costs than traditional content.[7]
June 2026Moving to an advisory role
On June 12, 2026, he announced that he was stepping away from his role at World Labs and would continue as an advisor. He said the decision would allow time for recovery after an accident and space for his next chapter.[8]
