Key facts

Founding of the Company

Anthropic was founded early in the year to conduct research on artificial intelligence safety, interpretability, and model steerability. Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei are its co-founders, serving as Chief Executive Officer and President, respectively.[1]

Series A Funding

The company announced $124 million in Series A funding led by Jaan Tallinn, to be used for research and for building prototypes of reliable, steerable artificial intelligence systems.[2]

Series B Funding

Introduction of Claude

The company formally introduced the Claude artificial intelligence assistant, offering a chat interface and an API for tasks such as summarization, question answering, writing, and coding. The initial versions included Claude and the lighter-weight Claude Instant.[3]

Announcement of the Long-Term Benefit Trust Governance Mechanism

Anthropic introduced the governance structure of the Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT). The company is a Delaware public benefit corporation, and the Trust obtains gradually increasing power to elect and remove directors through a special class of Class T stock, a design intended to have it elect a majority of the board within a specified period. The announcement stressed that this structure remains a governance experiment.[4]

Release of the Claude 3 Family

The Claude 3 family comprises Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus, and added the ability to process visual content such as images and charts. Opus and Sonnet became available on the day of the announcement, while Haiku was still to be released at the time.[5]

Open-Sourcing of the Model Context Protocol

Anthropic open-sourced the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a universal protocol for connecting artificial intelligence applications with data sources and tools. The initial release included the protocol specification, SDKs, local server support in the Claude desktop apps, and open-source example servers.[6]

Research Preview of Claude Code

Anthropic released Claude 3.7 Sonnet and at the same time launched a limited research preview of Claude Code, a command-line coding tool. Developers can delegate engineering tasks such as searching code, editing files, and running tests from the terminal; the model offers two modes of operation, standard responses and extended thinking.[7]

Series E Funding

The company announced $3.5 billion in Series E funding at a post-money valuation of $61.5 billion, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. The funds were planned for model development, computing capacity, safety research, and international expansion.[8]

Series F Funding

Anthropic completed $13 billion in Series F funding at a post-money valuation of $183 billion. ICONIQ led the round, with Fidelity Management & Research Company and Lightspeed Venture Partners co-leading.[9]

Series G Funding

The company announced $30 billion in Series G funding at a post-money valuation of $380 billion, led by GIC and Coatue, to be used for frontier research and for expanding products and infrastructure.[10]

Revision of the Responsible Scaling Policy

Anthropic released the third version of its Responsible Scaling Policy, which separates the measures the company can implement on its own from its recommendations for the industry as a whole and introduces a Frontier Safety Roadmap and periodic risk reports. The roadmap is defined as a set of goals against which progress is publicly assessed rather than as hard commitments; in some circumstances, risk reports require external review.[11]

Expanded Compute Partnership with Google and Broadcom

Anthropic announced a new agreement with Google and Broadcom for multiple gigawatts of next-generation TPU computing capacity, expected to come online progressively starting in 2027, to be used for developing and serving Claude models.[12]

Expanded Partnership with Amazon

Anthropic committed to spending more than $100 billion on AWS technology over the next ten years to secure up to 5 gigawatts of new computing capacity. Amazon at the same time announced an additional $5 billion investment and may invest up to a further $20 billion in the future; the latter is a future arrangement.[13]

Joining the Blender Development Fund

Blender Funding Changed to a One-Time Donation

After the April 28 announcement, the Blender community was divided; some users who dislike generative artificial intelligence opposed the funding, and reactions on social media ranged from support to statements that they would no longer donate.[16]

On May 1, Blender Foundation chairman Francesco Siddi said the foundation had heard the community’s concerns about how it engages with artificial intelligence companies, acknowledged that it should have sought more input from contributors before making the decision, and apologized; after discussions with the team and a number of community contributors, the foundation decided to receive the funds as a one-time donation rather than as a Development Fund membership. The foundation said that Anthropic had been informed and supports this decision, and that the funds will be spent on core activities for the Blender project.[17][17][17]

Series H Funding

Final Approval of the Bartz Copyright Settlement

The United States District Court for the Northern District of California granted final approval of the class settlement in Bartz v. Anthropic, establishing a $1.5 billion settlement fund. The certified class is limited to the copyright owners of books on the works list that Anthropic downloaded from LibGen or PiLiMi; the ruling is not a uniform conclusion on all copyright questions concerning artificial intelligence training.[19]

Federal Appeals Court Upholds Military Supply-Chain Exclusion

The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected Anthropic’s challenge to a military supply-chain exclusion measure. The dispute concerned the company’s refusal to relax contractual restrictions on the use of Claude for lethal autonomous warfare and domestic surveillance; the majority opinion upheld the measure, and Judge Henderson dissented.[20]

Release of Claude Sonnet 5.5

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5, positioned for uses such as everyday tasks, fixing code, and creating documents, as a faster, lower-cost complement to Opus 5.5. The company also said that Haiku 5.5 was planned for release in the following weeks.[21]

Report on a Broadcom Financing Arrangement

ReutersReutersReuters is an international news agency founded in London in 1851 by Paul Julius Reuter and is now the news business of Thomson Reuters. It provides text, photo, video, and graphics coverage to media and institutional clients and distributes it through channels such as Reuters Connect.Open the full entry reported, citing filing documents, that Anthropic could obtain up to $42 billion in financing through a Broadcom arrangement to lease chips, with promissory notes convertible into company shares; at the time, the notes were not expected to be sold before an IPO. The amount is a financing ceiling.[22]

Launch of Claude Frontier Academy

Anthropic committed $100 million to launch Claude Frontier Academy, with the goal of training 10,000 engineers by the end of 2027. The first cohort comes from companies and professional services firms, and the program includes in-person training, assessments, and a 12-week on-site placement.[23]

Company Positioning and Governance

Anthropic is an artificial intelligence research company that develops the Claude models and related tools and operates as a public benefit corporation. Its official company page lists reliability, interpretability, and steerability as research and development directions; these are company goals and do not mean that its models are guaranteed to be error-free or risk-free.[24]
