Key facts

Graduation and Joining Aramco

He earned a petroleum-engineering bachelor’s degree from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in 1982 and joined Aramco, initially working in production, drilling and reservoir engineering.[2][3]

Ras Tanura Production

In June 1997, he became manager of the Ras Tanura Producing Department.[3]

Executive Education

He completed Columbia University’s Senior Executive Program in 2002, an executive course rather than a university degree.[1]

Advancing in Upstream Leadership

He became chief petroleum engineer in 2004, executive director of Petroleum Engineering and Development in 2005, vice president in 2006, acting Exploration and Producing business-line head in 2007, and formally senior vice president in 2008.[3]

The 2025 annual report groups his upstream senior-vice-presidential service as 2007–2015; the earlier announcement distinguishes acting from permanent appointments.[2][3]

Industry Advisory Work

His Saudi Press Agency biography records election to SPE’s Industry Advisory Council in early 2008.[3]

Joining Aramco’s Board

He has served on Aramco’s board since 2010.[2]

Acting and Permanent CEO Appointments

An announcement published on May 1, 2015 confirmed him as acting president and CEO. On September 17, Aramco announced his permanent appointment.[3][4]

SPE Lifetime Achievement Recognition

In 2017, he received SPE’s Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award for industry leadership.[5][1]

Aramco’s Public Listing

He led Aramco’s initial public offering in 2019.[6]

The SABIC Majority-Stake Acquisition

Aramco completed its $69.1 billion acquisition of a 70% stake in SABIC in June 2020. In its half-year results, Nasser connected the corporate transaction to downstream and chemicals development.[7]

Industry Awards

In 2020, he received the ICIS–The Chemists’ Club Kavaler Award and Energy Intelligence’s Energy Executive of the Year recognition.[6]

Operational Net-Zero Ambition

On October 23, 2021, Aramco announced an ambition for net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from its wholly owned and operated assets by 2050. Nasser endorsed it; this scope does not cover all emissions from customers using its products, and the announcement was not an achieved outcome.[8]

Joining BlackRock’s Board

Debating the Energy Transition

At CERAWeek in March 2024, Nasser criticized prevailing transition strategies, arguing for continued oil-and-gas investment aligned with affordability and demand alongside emissions reductions and efficiency. His opposition to rapidly phasing out hydrocarbons was a policy position.[9]

For context at the time, the IEA’s World Energy Outlook 2023 projected peaks in coal, oil and gas demand before 2030 under its Stated Policies Scenario. That conditional analysis did not imply the disappearance of hydrocarbon demand.[10]

Expanding Venture-Capital Allocations

In 2024, Aramco disclosed an additional $4 billion allocation to Aramco Ventures, raising it from $3 billion to $7 billion. The figures describe corporate investment allocations, not completed expenditure or Nasser’s personal investments.[11]

The BlackRock Director-Independence Dispute

In May 2024, then New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, acting for NYCERS, urged shareholders to oppose Nasser’s reelection, questioning independence in light of Aramco–BlackRock business ties and his climate positions. These were shareholder arguments; BlackRock designated him independent.[12]

The retirement systems’ subsequent 2024 shareholder-initiatives report records that he was reelected at the meeting.[13]

Engineering Experience and Talent Development

At a young-employee townhall, he recalled initially questioning an early-career assignment studying declining fields in Midland, Texas, before appreciating its relevance to long-term reservoir management. He encouraged learning the current job thoroughly and remaining open to younger colleagues.[14]

AI and Long-Term Investment Interview

In a full Bloomberg TelevisionBloomberg TVBloomberg TV (officially Bloomberg Television) is a global business and financial news television channel owned by Bloomberg L.P. It provides live market news, analysis, and interviews, with separate programming for the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region.Open the full entry interview, he identified data, computing infrastructure and domain-trained employees as foundations for AI. He reported technology-derived value of about $2 billion in 2023 and $4 billion in 2024; this covered technology overall, not AI alone.[15]

He also described investing across cycles for long-term demand, while seeking binding offtake commitments before major hydrogen expenditure.[15]

The London Oil-Inventory Warning

At London’s Energy Intelligence Forum, he said nearly 3 billion barrels of gross supply had been lost, offset by over 1 billion drawn from stocks, largely onshore commercial inventories. He estimated commercial stocks below 6 billion barrels, mostly unavailable for practical use, leaving a thin supply cushion.[16]

He said replenishment while meeting demand could take up to two years after Hormuz fully reopened and confidence returned—a conditional assessment, not a fixed recovery deadline.[16]

The Riyadh Energy Conference

A week later, at the 25th WPC Energy Conference in Riyadh, he advocated spare capacity, multiple export routes and storage for supply resilience, and said Aramco was studying additional routes and expanding overseas storage. He outlined a target for 2030 sales-gas capacity about 80% above 2021 production.[17]
