Founding and Cross-Border Employment Services

In 2019, Alex Bouaziz and Shuo Wang founded Deel and took part in Y Combinator’s winter startup program. In the company’s account, the two met at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and noticed that friends struggled to obtain cross-border work because of visas and local labor rules, so they started with the contract, compliance, and payment problems of international contractors. Alex serves as chief executive officer and Shuo as chief revenue officer.[1][2]

Deel later brought contractor management, employer of record (EOR), and payroll management for employees of clients’ own entities onto a single platform. The first handles contracts and payments for independent contractors; the EOR service supports client hiring through local employing entities; and global payroll and HRIS bring together employee records, payroll, benefits, and onboarding and offboarding processes. The company itself operates as a distributed team.[2][3]

Pivoting to Payroll During Y Combinator

Shuo Wang recalled that when she and Alex Bouaziz entered Y Combinator in January 2019, they planned to build a cryptocurrency payment platform for content creators; a month later the crypto market fell, the plan faltered, and the team pivoted three times during the ten-week program. The two interviewed roughly 200 companies in their batch about hiring and payment needs, and the answer they kept hearing was paying international workers, which led them into payroll; Wang said part of Deel’s product roadmap still traces back to those interviews.[4][4][4][4][4]

Wang has served as chief revenue officer since the pre-seed round. She said the company did not adopt the then-common industry model of reselling local employer-of-record services, instead building its own legal entities and banking infrastructure country by country so that it would have a backup if one payment channel failed; as of July 2026, the company operated about 450 bank accounts in 120 countries.[4][4][4]

The company said its revenue grew 20-fold in 2020 and that it had more than 1,800 business customers; its team had grown from 7 people to more than 120 since January 2020, and it planned to set up 80 new owned entities worldwide in 2021.[9][9][9][9][9][9]

PaySpace and Hofy

The deal allowed Deel to expand multi-country payroll on its own calculation engine rather than only connecting third-party systems in different regions.[13][14]

On July 18, Deel announced its acquisition of the device management company Hofy, adding hardware procurement, delivery, retrieval, and device lifecycle management to its business portfolio. Deel had already used Hofy to support its own distributed team before the deal; as of a company announcement updated in April 2025, Hofy had been integrated as Deel IT, providing device management, software provisioning, application access management, and integrations with mobile device management and identity tools.[15][16]

On March 17, competitor Rippling sued Deel in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging that it obtained trade secrets through a Rippling employee. Deel denied the allegations and in April of the same year sued Rippling in Delaware, later alleging, among other things, that Rippling impersonated a customer to obtain its materials. These are the parties’ claims in litigation and do not establish that either side has borne final legal liability.[19][20]

On June 3, Deel announced that its annualized revenue run rate had reached $1 billion and said it then served about 35,000 customers and 1.25 million workers in more than 150 countries, with revenue up 75% year over year. The annualized run rate is a measure extrapolated from the current pace of business and differs from actual revenue for a full fiscal year; the profitability and customer figures are company disclosures.[21]

Obtaining an Australian Financial Services Licence

Deel announced that the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) had granted it an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL), allowing it to provide regulated financial services directly through its Australian entity; the company said the application took about 12 months. The company also said it already held financial licences in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and the European Economic Area; possible future features such as splitting pay across multiple bank accounts, sending money, and paying bills were plans.[22][22][22][22][22]

The company said it achieved $100 million in monthly revenue for the first time in September and had been profitable for three consecutive years; its goals of building a real-time local payroll engine, advancing AI products, and expanding its service coverage were post-funding development plans.[24]

In a 20VC interview released the same day, Alex described PaySpace as an important infrastructure acquisition, explaining that its multi-country payroll technology could help Deel expand into new markets faster. He said the acquisition shortened the time it would have taken to build in-house and that the price exceeded $100 million; this is the founder’s range and assessment given in an interview, and the full terms of the deal were not disclosed.[25]

A Florida Lawsuit Is Dismissed

A federal court in Florida dismissed a lawsuit against Deel. The case had been filed in January 2025 on behalf of investors by the court-appointed receiver of Surge Capital Ventures, alleging that Deel processed payments for Surge that helped Russian entities evade U.S. sanctions and invoking the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO); the court found that the plaintiff lacked standing and failed to identify a distinct RICO enterprise. Deel described the case as Rippling-aligned litigation, while Rippling chief executive Parker Conrad said Rippling was not a party to it and did not fund it.[26][26][26][27][26]

Court Rules on Deel’s Counterclaims

In Rippling’s case against Deel, Deel had filed counterclaims against Rippling, its chief executive Parker Conrad, and former Rippling employee Keith O’Brien, alleging claims including trademark infringement, false advertising, and RICO. Breyer denied Deel’s motion to strike O’Brien’s affidavit on the ground that O’Brien had invoked the Fifth Amendment, as well as its request to reconsider the earlier ruling on its motion to dismiss.[40][40][40][40]

The court granted Rippling’s motion to compel arbitration, sending the counterclaims concerning a Rippling employee’s access to Deel’s services through an account for a fictitious business to arbitration and staying the related computer fraud counterclaims and Deel’s RICO counterclaims in their entirety pending arbitration. The cybersquatting and trademark counterclaims concerning the deal.com domain were dismissed with leave to amend, and the false advertising counterclaims were dismissed in part and allowed to proceed in part.
