Key facts

Postdoctoral Research

After earning his neuroscience PhD, Huberman conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford from 2005 to 2010.[1]

Academic Appointments

He was an assistant professor at UC San Diego from 2011 to 2015 and became a Stanford associate professor in 2016.[2]

Pew Scholar

He joined the 2013 class of Pew Biomedical Scholars. Pew described his research on visual-circuit development and how retinal neurons connect to appropriate targets in the brain.[3]

Mouse Vision Research

Huberman was senior author of a mouse optic-nerve injury study led by Jung-Hwan Albert Lim. Combining visual stimulation with growth-signaling intervention promoted axon regrowth and restored some visual behaviors, but not fine discrimination.[4]

Cogan Award

In 2017, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) awarded him its Cogan Award.[2]

Huberman Lab Podcast

Huberman launched Huberman Lab in 2021, using solo episodes and guest interviews to discuss neuroscience and science in everyday life.[5]

Breathwork Trial

His coauthored randomized trial of 108 people over 28 days found greater positive-affect improvement with cyclic sighing than mindfulness, but no significant sleep change. Long-term effects were not established.[6]

Reception of Science Communication

Jonathan Jarry of McGill’s Office for Science and Society praised his neuroscience explanations while criticizing his supplement promotion and evidentiary standards, and discussing interests associated with sponsorship.[8]

Virtual-Reality Vision Trial

His coauthored open-label trial of 22 patients appeared online in 2025 and in the 2026 volume. Overall visual function did not significantly improve; controlled research remained necessary. Only eight participants were sufficiently adherent for efficacy analysis.[9]

CBS News Contributor

Publication of Protocols

S&S/Simon Element published his Protocols: An Operating Manual for the Human Body on September 15, covering sleep, exercise, stress, nutrition, and learning.[11]

Appointment and Commercial Disclosures

Stanford’s formal appointment listing identifies him as associate professor of neurobiology and, by courtesy, of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.[12]

The podcast discloses that it is produced by Scicomm Media independently of Stanford, with Huberman as a cofounder. He discloses paid scientific advisory work for AG1, Eight Sleep, Function Health, Momentous, Reveri, and WHOOP.[13]
