Key facts

University education

Ertürk earned a bachelor’s degree from Bilkent University in 2003 and a doctorate from LMU Munich in 2009.[1]

Postdoctoral research at Genentech

In 2009, he moved to Genentech in South San Francisco for postdoctoral research.[2]

3DISCO organ-imaging protocol

A 3DISCO protocol for three-dimensional organ imaging, coauthored by Ertürk, appeared online on October 11, 2012, in Nature Protocols’ November issue.[3]

uDISCO tissue clearing

He coauthored the uDISCO study, which combined tissue clearing and shrinkage to image nerves and vessels across intact rodents.[4]

Institute directorship

His university CV dates the start of his directorship of Helmholtz Munich’s Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine to July 2019.[5]

DeepMACT metastasis imaging

DeepMACT combined tissue clearing, light-sheet microscopy and deep learning to detect micrometastases throughout mice and assess therapeutic-antibody targeting. Ertürk coauthored the work.[6]

SHANEL human-organ research

A team involving Ertürk introduced SHANEL to clear postmortem human organs for cellular-resolution three-dimensional imaging. Using these maps for future bioprinting remained a research goal.[7]

ERC Consolidator Grant

LMU’s Faculty of Medicine lists Ertürk as a 2020 ERC Consolidator Grant recipient for CALVARIA, concerning translational aspects of skull-marrow–meninges connections.[8]

Entrepreneurship and professorship

His university CV lists him as Deep Piction’s founder and CEO from February, an LMU W3 professor from July, and a founder of 1X1 Biotech from September.[5]

Deep Piction’s website identifies him as founder and CEO and describes combining whole-mouse imaging, AI and nanocarrier delivery for drug development.[9]

DISCO-MS spatial proteomics

Ertürk’s and Matthias Mann’s teams developed DISCO-MS, combining tissue clearing, robotic sampling and mass spectrometry to analyze regions located through three-dimensional imaging.[10]

wildDISCO whole-body maps

His team helped develop wildDISCO, using standard antibodies, clearing and light-sheet microscopy to map cellular structures across mice and share online atlases with researchers.[11]

Falling Walls Life Sciences award

In September 2024, Helmholtz Munich announced that Ertürk had won that year’s Falling Walls Life Sciences award for integrating tissue clearing and AI.[12]

In the organizer’s interview, he described a long-term goal of reducing animal experiments through digital simulations of biological systems.[13]

SCP-Nano nanocarrier tracking

SCP-Nano research by Ertürk and collaborators combined clearing, light-sheet imaging and deep learning to track nanocarrier distribution throughout mice at single-cell resolution.[14]

MouseMapper research

His team published MouseMapper, a deep-learning framework for whole-mouse nerve and immune-cell analysis, studying obesity-associated changes and finding some corresponding molecular signatures in human tissue.[15]
