Key facts
Early Life: Moving from China and Germany to Long Island, New York
In a 2025 interview, Alex Q. Xu recalled that his journey began in China; at age 6 he moved with his family to Germany, after which he changed schools seven times across different countries before finally settling on Long Island, New York, in the United States. He sees the repeated moves and shifts in language and culture as the reason he later valued a sense of belonging in online communities. Public sources do not reliably disclose his specific birth city, date of birth, or nationality.[2]
University and the Limits of Evidence on His Education
Available public sources can link Alex Q. Xu to undergraduate club activities at the University of California, San Diego, and some older industry bios say he studied economics or business/management economics, but his current personal website does not list a school, degree, or graduation year.[1]
Early 2010sAmazon and Google
Before entering the crypto industry, Alex Q. Xu worked at Amazon and Google in sales, partnerships, or digital marketing roles. Different interviews do not fully agree on the order of the companies, the exact job titles, or the start and end months, but multiple interviews with him and independent reports consistently support both positions.[3]
2016Discovering Ethereum
Alex Q. Xu says he was introduced to EthereumEthereumEthereum is an open, general-purpose smart contract blockchain that launched in 2015, and its native asset is ether (ETH). The project was proposed by Vitalik Buterin and advanced jointly by eight co-founders; the network now uses proof of stake and centers on the EVM, the account model, a rollup scaling roadmap, and the open EIP process.Open the full entry through a colleague in 2016. The ability of decentralized protocols to let strangers exchange value without permission from a single platform shifted his interest from internet growth and partnerships work to crypto protocols. This timing comes from his own recollection.[2]
2017–2021The Early 0x Team and DeFi Operations
In 2017, Alex Q. Xu joined the early team of 0x Protocol, mainly responsible for operations, and worked there for about four years. He later recalled taking part in the team’s growth from about 5 people to about 50, and gaining operational experience across open protocols, token incentives, developer ecosystems, and decentralized governance. The team sizes come from his later recollection; 0x’s protocol achievements were collective work.[2]
July 2020Joining Lore’s Angel Round
CrunchbaseCrunchbaseCrunchbase is a private-company data and intelligence platform headquartered in San Francisco. Created by Michael Arrington under TechCrunch in 2007 and spun out of AOL/Verizon in 2015, it now focuses on using AI to forecast private companies’ funding, growth and exits.Open the full entry lists Zagabond as an angel investor in the social protocol project Lore, in a round dated July 31, 2020. The record predates Azuki’s founding, and the public page does not disclose the round’s total size, his personal contribution, or whether he took part in running the project.[4]
Since June 2021CryptoPhunks
In 2021, Zagabond took part in CryptoPhunks. The collection flipped CryptoPunks images horizontally to comment on NFT copyright and decentralized culture; it was delisted from a marketplace after copyright complaints, and control changed hands several times within the community. Zagabond later described it as an experimental project; critics argued that the team walked away after the controversy and maintenance difficulties, amounting to abandoning holders. The term “rug pull” here is a community accusation, not a finding made against him by any judicial authority.[5]
2021Tendies
Zagabond then took part in Tendies, an NFT project themed around fast-food chicken tenders. He later said the project lacked sufficient product-market fit and community staying power and was a failed experiment; some holders criticized the team for stopping development after sales and attention fell short. Public materials are insufficient to establish exact revenue, personal profit, or legal liability.[6]
Since August 2021CryptoZunks
In August 2021, Zagabond took part in CryptoZunks, a project that reworked pixel avatars with a mechanism for rerolling traits. The project later fell into disputes with its community over the smart contract, minting, and the team’s identity, and some members accused the founders of a lack of transparency and left. Zagabond said he handed control over to the community; a real-name guess of Alex Hu in a contemporaneous long Chinese-language article lacked a reliable basis and has been contradicted by the Alex Q. Xu information on his own website.[7]
Late 2021Forming Chiru Labs and the Azuki Team
In late 2021, Zagabond and other anonymous members formed the team later known as Chiru Labs or Azuki Labs to launch the anime-style avatar collection Azuki. The public founding team also included 2pm.flow, Location TBA, and Hoshiboy; the artist Arnold Tsang was a key co-creator. The person, the founding team, the company, and the Azuki brand are related but distinct entities.[8]
January 12, 2022Azuki Launch
On January 12, 2022, Azuki released 10,000 Ethereum avatar NFTs centered on an anime aesthetic. Through its Dutch auction design and a relatively complete brand narrative, the project quickly drew market attention, and early trading volume and floor price rose rapidly. Zagabond was responsible for business, community, and organizational direction, while the team shared the art, technology, and operations; short-term price performance is no guarantee of long-term value.[9]
February 2022An Anonymous Founding Team and Early Business Goals
In February 2022, a ForbesForbesForbes is an American business media brand that began with Forbes magazine, founded by B.C. Forbes in 1917. It is known for rankings such as the Forbes 400, the World’s Billionaires list and 30 Under 30, and operates Forbes.com, ForbesLive events and licensed editions in 81 countries. Since 2014 a majority stake has been held by the Hong Kong investment group Integrated Whale Media; a 2021 plan to list on the New York Stock Exchange through a special purpose acquisition company was terminated in 2022. It is headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey.Open the full entry interview still introduced the founder by the pseudonym Zagabond and disclosed his experience at Google, Amazon, and 0x. The team then proposed developing Azuki into a community-driven media and brand ecosystem spanning streetwear, events, games, and animation. What was described at this stage were business goals; anonymity itself also does not mean his identity or business record had been audited by a third party.[9]
May 9, 2022Disclosing His Earlier Projects
On May 9, 2022, Zagabond disclosed that before Azuki he had been involved in CryptoPhunks, Tendies, and CryptoZunks. He called these experiences learning experiments that shaped Azuki’s methodology, but many community members felt that the previously undisclosed control relationships and the way the projects were exited damaged trust, and accused him of a “rug pull.” The Azuki market fluctuated noticeably after the disclosure.[5]
May 11–13, 2022Apology, Refunds, and Handover to Communities
After public discussion and a Twitter Space, Zagabond admitted that the manner of disclosure and communication had been inappropriate and apologized, promised to handle refunds related to Tendies, and handed the earlier projects’ contracts, private keys, funds, or developer assets to the respective communities. CryptoPhunks community records say the community later received control of the contract, 496 NFTs, and about $1.44 million in royalties. These figures are community records and are not equivalent to an independent audit of all on-chain flows across the three projects.[10]
September 2022Joining Goldsky’s Seed Round
When the blockchain data infrastructure company Goldsky completed its seed round in September 2022, Crunchbase listed Zagabond as one of the participants. This is a personal investment record outside Azuki; the round size and his personal share were not publicly disclosed.[4]
October 2022PBT and the Move into Physical Collectibles
In October 2022, Zagabond introduced the Physical Backed Token (PBT) scheme, which attempts to link physical items to on-chain tokens through embedded chips so that ownership transfer and authenticity verification can happen together. Azuki applied this idea to physical collectibles such as the Golden Skateboard. PBT is a technical and product design and does not automatically solve problems of chip replacement, custody, redemption, legal ownership, or long-term service availability.[11]
June 27, 2023Elementals Launch and Crisis of Trust
On June 27, 2023, Azuki launched 20,000 Elementals and, before the public sale, collected 20,000 ETH through a holder presale, about $37.5 million at the time. Minting was marred by congestion and user-experience problems, and the revealed images were criticized as too similar to the original Azuki, leaving holders worried about brand dilution. The team then admitted that the launch “missed the mark.” The episode focused questions of revenue scale, product differentiation, and community trust on Zagabond and the management team.[12]
December 2023Joining Frame’s Early Funding
When Frame, an NFT-focused Ethereum layer-two network, disclosed its early funding, the round was led by Electric Capital and listed participants including Dingaling, Ray ChanRay ChanRay Chan is a Hong Kong internet entrepreneur, co-founder and CEO of 9GAG, founder of Memeland, and a contributor to MemeStrategy.Open the full entry, and Zagabond. Frame was later acquired by Igloo and folded into work related to Abstract.[13]
2024Anime, Animechain, and Anime.com
Starting in 2024, Azuki extended its character universe into the Enter The Garden anime anthology and took part in a broader anime ecosystem push including Animecoin, Animechain, and Anime.com. Zagabond advocates using blockchain to organize the relationships among fans, creators, and IP, but the Animecoin Foundation, the chain’s technology partners, and Azuki Labs each carry different issuance and governance responsibilities.[2]

June 12, 2024Investing in Particle Trade’s Strategic Round
Particle Trade listed Zagabond among its angel investors when it disclosed its strategic funding. The project is a leveraged trading protocol for tokens and NFTs; the public round did not disclose the total raised or Zagabond’s personal contribution, and it is not the same project as the similarly named Particle Network.[15]

Mid-2024Helping Acquire the Anime.com Domain
In an interview, Zagabond described how the Azuki team acquired the Anime.com domain; the domain had previously carried a public asking price of $10 million, but the sale price has not been reliably disclosed. This was an acquisition of a company asset under his leadership.[17]
September 2024Buying Infinex Patron NFTs
Infinex officially listed Zagabond as a Key Community Patron. The Patron Sale sold NFTs to funds, foundations, angels, and community members at the same price and terms, ultimately selling 43,244 NFTs for total sales of $67.7 million; the public page does not disclose how many Zagabond bought or which lockup tier he chose.[18]
November 2024Joining Rekt Brands’ $1.5 Million Round
After launching Rekt Drinks, Rekt Brands completed a $1.5 million community and angel round whose public investor list included Zagabond, Luca Netz, Jack Butcher, and others. Rekt Brands extends the rektguy NFT into beverage and brand businesses; the round was not a purchase of rektguy NFTs, and individual contribution amounts were not disclosed.[19]
January 2025Revisiting Elementals and Earlier Projects
In January 2025, Zagabond again addressed the earlier projects and Elementals in a long interview. He said the early projects taught the team about community ownership and product sustainability, and acknowledged that Elementals’ marketing, expectation management, and communication could have been executed better, while stressing that Azuki was still investing in content and infrastructure. This is the after-the-fact explanation of the person involved; it shows his position but cannot replace independent assessment of holder losses, fund flows, or governance outcomes.[2]
January 2025Joining Strike’s $7.6 Million Round
CB Insights’ funding record for Strike lists Zagabond among the participants in a $7.6 million seed round dated January 25, 2025. This evidence comes from a funding database rather than a name-by-name announcement from the project.[20]
February 18, 2025Joining fomo’s $2 Million Pre-Seed Round

Kuru, an on-chain order book project in the Monad ecosystem, completed a Series A of about $11.6 million led by Paradigm, with participation from institutions such as Electric Capital and angel investors including Zagabond. Reports also described its model combining an order book with automated market making; participation in the round does not mean Azuki or its holders bear any responsibility for Kuru.[22]
August 2025Reviewing Azuki’s Community and IP Strategy
In August 2025, Zagabond reviewed Azuki’s evolution from an NFT collection into an anime brand, emphasizing community co-creation, in-person events, animated content, and the connection between physical and digital collectibles. He sees blockchain as a layer for coordinating identity, ownership, and participation, not as the brand itself. These statements are the founder’s strategic judgments; viewership, licensing revenue, and mainstream user conversion still require independent data to verify.[3]
October 2025Joining Printr’s Seed Extension Round
The multichain token launch platform Printr lists Zagabond as an angel investor on its official backers page. The project disclosed a seed extension round at the same time and has been advancing cross-chain launch tools, but the public page does not state Zagabond’s personal contribution, the valuation, or any governance rights.[23]
2026Manga, TCG, and Long-Term IP Strategy
In March 2026, Zagabond summarized Azuki’s approach as first building a world people can participate in, then gradually unfolding the story through manga, animation, physical products, and a trading card game. He emphasized the cycle among character recognition, community rituals, collecting mechanics, and long-term storytelling. As of 2026, this framework reflects Azuki Labs’ strategy in progress; unreleased seasons, products, partnerships, or revenue targets remain plans.[24]
February 2026Joining Bluff’s $21 Million Strategic Round
CryptoRank lists Zagabond in the $21 million strategic round announced by the gaming project Bluff in February 2026. The visible project announcement does not list every angel individually.[25]
