Key facts

Origins and 2020: a shift to direct ordering

According to the company’s account, Guild’s work helping his mother’s dog-grooming business inspired the venture. Its early websites focused on bringing diners into restaurants. After the pandemic disrupted dine-in service, customer discussions led the team toward direct online ordering, launched in May 2020.[2]

Guild subsequently teamed up with Bloembergen, who had built technology for larger restaurant businesses. Owner expanded from ordering into an integrated platform with websites, customer relationship management, and email and text marketing, reducing the need to manage separate tools.[3][2]

Series B and an integrated platform

Owner’s early-2024 memo reported a $33 million Series B led by Redpoint and Jack Altman. Its offering included websites, ordering, CRM, automated marketing and branded mobile apps. At that stage, it positioned the platform as a complement to existing point-of-sale systems.[2]

Series C and plans for AI agents

The company raised a $120 million Series C co-led by Alex Kurland of Meritech and Shalini Rao of Headline, reaching a $1 billion valuation. Both were to join its board. The round’s memo reported more than 10,000 restaurant users and a team that grew from about 100 to 200 in 2024.[4]

The memo called its planned business-facing agents “AI Executives,” describing natural-language interaction for campaigns, website updates and business analysis. Owner also advocated a standardized, tested product structure with limited branding customization, rather than requiring merchants to design their own technical workflows.[4]

Apollo reaches full deployment

An engineering retrospective published in October 2026 dated Apollo’s rollout to all website traffic to January 26, followed by a public launch on February 9. It replaced a Next.js rendering system with Astro, selectively loaded React components and Cloudflare Workers at the edge, using Workers Cache and R2 for caching.[5]

The team used staged deployment and experiments comparing the old and new systems. It reported menu-page 75th-percentile largest contentful paint falling from 5.4 to 0.7 seconds and roughly 4% higher revenue per restaurant. These were Owner’s measurements across its own network, rather than universal outcomes for website migrations.[5]

Series D financing

Owner announced a $240 million Series D at a $2.3 billion valuation. Growth Equity at Goldman SachsGoldman SachsGoldman Sachs is an American financial services group headquartered in New York whose businesses include investment banking, securities trading, asset management, and wealth management. It traces its origins to the commercial paper business Marcus Goldman founded in 1869; it listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1999 under the ticker GS and became a bank holding company in 2008. David Solomon serves as chairman and chief executive officer.Open the full entry Alternatives led, with Meritech, Redpoint, Headline and Jack Altman participating. Owner reported annual recurring revenue above $100 million and projected more than $1 billion in restaurant sales through its platform that year, distinguishing its own revenue from merchants’ sales.[1]

Guild described the AI strategy as performing technology and marketing work that small businesses could not afford dedicated teams to do. The company planned international expansion and entry into categories such as salons and grocers. Its Series D memo set out a sequence of U.S. independent restaurants, additional regions and then additional industries.[6]

development of tsrs

Max Schwenk, Owner’s head of AI developer experience, described tsrs, a coding-agent-assisted Rust port of TypeScript’s Go implementation intended to reduce typechecking time and memory use. He described checks against the same upstream version, diagnostic comparisons, fault injection and determinism tests. Owner reported typechecking of its internal codebase in about seven seconds in CI.[7]
