Key facts

Early Life: Programming as a Teenager

Blecharczyk started writing computer programs at the age of 12, and by 14 the hobby had become a business; in high school he was already running his own business.[1][2]

Early Life: Computer Science at Harvard

Choosing between MIT and Harvard, he picked Harvard because he felt it had a more well-rounded student body; he lived in Adams House and in 2005 received an A.B. in Computer Science from Harvard University.[2][2][3]

Engineering Work

After graduating, Blecharczyk took a “traditional” job near Washington, D.C., and went on to hold several engineering positions. He recalled that after meeting successful entrepreneurs in the San Francisco Bay Area, he realized he had all the raw capabilities they did.[2][4][2]

Co-Founding Airbnb

In 2008, Blecharczyk, a software engineer, joined the project Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia had started as AirBedandBreakfast.com and co-founded Airbnb with them. The three set out to solve how to make strangers comfortable enough to stay in each other’s homes, designing trust mechanisms including host and guest profiles, integrated messaging, two-way reviews, and secure payments.[4][4][4][4]

He recalled that for the entire first year after starting the company they were unable to raise any funds, as investors did not understand the concept, and then the recession began; what carried the team through was the friendship among the three founders and the value of the product itself.[2][2][2]

Responding to a Former Roommate’s Criticism

In November 2011, entrepreneur Aaron Greenspan, Blecharczyk’s freshman roommate at Harvard, criticized what he described as unethical practices in Silicon Valley in a blog post and referred to Blecharczyk’s involvement in email spamming in college; at the time Airbnb also faced controversy over promotional emails sent to people advertising vacation rentals on Craigslist, which company representatives said were sent by an outside company contracted by Airbnb.[7][7][7][7]

Blecharczyk responded in a letter to The Harvard Crimson, “vehemently” disagreeing that Silicon Valley was fraudulent and saying that commenting on something that happened over a decade ago was neither productive nor helpful.[7][7]

Chief Technology Officer

Blecharczyk led the creation of Airbnb’s engineering, data science, payments, and performance marketing teams. At least from 2015 to early 2017, he was Airbnb’s chief technology officer.[8][8][2][3]

Signing the Giving Pledge

On June 1, 2016, Blecharczyk and his wife Elizabeth signed the Giving Pledge, pledging to dedicate the majority of their wealth over time to philanthropy, with a focus on the potential of children and transformative ideas and interests including education, scientific research, medicine, space exploration, conservation of the planet, and more effective governance.[1][1][1][1][1]

Chairman of Airbnb China

Airbnb launched its Chinese brand, Aibiying, in March 2017. On October 19, 2017, Blecharczyk, already chief strategy officer, was named chairman of Airbnb China, planning to travel to China monthly and work with the Airbnb China staff of over 100 people in Beijing and Shanghai.[9][10][10]

City Portal and the IPO

In September 2020, Airbnb launched City Portal, whose creation Blecharczyk oversaw, to help local governments understand short-term rentals and enforce related rules.[8][9]

When Airbnb went public in December 2020, Blecharczyk was chief strategy officer, chairman of Airbnb China, co-founder, and director.[4][9]

Suspending the Domestic China Business

On May 24, 2022, Airbnb posted a letter signed by Blecharczyk to Chinese users on its official WeChat account, announcing that from July 30, 2022 it would suspend homes and experiences in China and refocus its China efforts on outbound travel; Chinese users could still book listings and experiences abroad. In the letter he said the decision was not easy and that Airbnb had welcomed more than 25 million guest arrivals in China since 2016.[11][11][11][11]

Airbnb Friendly Apartments

In November 2022, Airbnb introduced Airbnb Friendly Apartments, a program overseen by Blecharczyk that helps renters find apartments where they can host on Airbnb part time. He also oversaw the creation of reservation screening technology to identify potentially high-risk reservations.[9][8][8]

On June 5, 2026, Airbnb’s annual meeting of stockholders re-elected him as a Class III director for a three-year term.
