Her professional training began in foreign languages; only later did she move into accounting and investment.[1]

She also previously worked at Peregrine Direct Investments, PricewaterhouseCoopers in Hong Kong, and the Bank of China head office in Beijing; her career path extended from banking and auditing to direct investment.[2]

In a 2018 interview, Kathy Xu cited Wahaha as one of her early consumer investment cases, recalling her assessment of the bottled beverage market while working at Peregrine. She said the investment was later exited early because of Peregrine’s own funding pressures, which also shaped her later views on fund terms.[4]

Baring Asia

Nanjing University materials record that before founding Capital Today, Kathy Xu worked at Baring Private Equity Asia.[2]

KANZHUN’s annual report specifies this period as 1998 to 2005 and notes that she served as a partner and head of China from 2001 to 2005. This period belongs to her tenure at Baring and predates the founding of Capital Today.[3]

NetEase Investment and the Internet Downturn

A Nanjing University profile records that Kathy Xu took part in investing in NetEase in 1999. This took place before Capital Today was founded.[1][4]

Nanjing University alumni materials state that Kathy Xu founded Capital Today Group in 2005 and has long engaged in venture capital and growth capital investment in Chinese companies.[1]
