Instaread

Instaread is a San Francisco–based book-content technology company founded by Rahul Chitrapu and Vishnu Chapalamadugu whose main business is a subscription service of text and audio book summaries that take about 15 minutes to read or hear; Chapalamadugu had earlier co-founded the book-rating aggregator iDreamBooks. In recent years the company has also offered news publishers Instaread Player, a free, ad-revenue-sharing player that turns articles into audio.

iDreamBooks Founded

In 2012, Vishnu (Vish) Chapalamadugu founded the book-review aggregator iDreamBooks in San Francisco with Rahul Simha and Mohit Aggarwal.[1]

Founded in March 2012, the site launched in mid-July, aggregating reviews from outlets such as The New York Times on the Rotten Tomatoes model and recommending books with 70% positive reviews.[2]

At launch the team had three founders and four contractors, and coverage centered on new titles from the Big Six US publishers.[3]

EarlyWord editor Nora Rawlinson commented that the site drew on many sources but was not timely, and that genre-fan bloggers skewed its lists.[4]

500 Startups Demo Day

At the 500 Startups demo day iDreamBooks presented itself as a trusted source of book recommendations, saying Amazon ratings were increasingly diluted; its location was given as Canada and India.[5]

Sony Partnership

Sony’s Reader Store e-bookstore began displaying iDreamBooks scores. iDreamBooks then aggregated reviews from more than 3,000 sources, had about five employees, and counted Rotten Tomatoes co-founder Patrick Lee and 500 Startups among its investors.[1]

Base and Revenue Model

iDreamBooks was headquartered on its investor’s campus in Mountain View, California, had started with money from family and friends, and relied mainly on licensing data to publishers, retailers and libraries.[6]

Over 300,000 Books

iDreamBooks catalogued more than 300,000 books from 5,000 to 6,000 review sources; small startups could use its API free with attribution, while larger companies such as Sony paid a small fee.[7]

InstaRead Summaries Published

Summaries credited to “InstaRead Summaries” appeared on Apple Books from 2013, such as a 30-minute summary of Killing Jesus; 2014 brought summaries of Thinking, Fast and Slow, The Power of Now and others.[8]

On June 11, 2014, Summary of No Place to Hide, credited to InstaRead Summaries Staff, was published through CreateSpace; the 42-page book stated it was a summary, not the original.[9]

Sony Closes Reader Store

iDreamBooks’ partner Sony closed its Reader Store in the United States and Canada, transferring customers to the Toronto-based Kobo.[10]

Three Seed Rounds

Instaread raised seed rounds of $325,000 in September 2014, $250,000 in August 2015 and $1.1 million in May 2016, about $1.7 million in all, from investors including 500 Global, Dave McClure, Pejman Mar Ventures and Wavemaker Partners.[11]

Instaread said its app had passed 800,000 downloads and had been featured in the Apple App Store, and that each summary was researched, written, edited and fact-checked.[16]

Unlike most rival apps, which offered only nonfiction, Instaread also summarized works by writers such as Nabokov, Colson Whitehead and Jonathan Franzen; the first section in its app was “Business and Economics”.[17]

App Updates

Instaread’s iOS app released version 7.0 on February 4, 2022 and version 8.4 on June 12, 2025.[18]

Instaread Player

In February 2026, Instaread introduced a WordPress plugin that automatically turns articles into audio and embeds a lightweight player.[20]

The plugin is free for publishers; Instaread runs audio ads in the stream and shares the revenue with them. As of October 2026 it had more than 70 active installations.[21]

The company says Instaread Player is live on more than 250 publishers and has converted 5,130,000 articles, with customers including The Hill, U.S. News and Newsmax.[22]

On April 9, 2026, Instaread released a video explaining that publishers can embed the player free and earn revenue from audio.[23]

Instaread runs The Nugget, a content site with sections on self-help, work, life and history, still updated in October 2026.[26]

Outside contributors can submit nonfiction summaries through Submittable; submissions are edited for accuracy and turned into audio, and contributors are paid. No call was open.[27]

Instaread Teams lets employees get a book’s key insights in 15-minute audio or text.[28]

Rahul Chitrapu is founder and chief executive, and Vishnu Chapalamadugu is co-founder and chief operating officer.[29]
