Key facts

Index Securities predecessor

Gerry Rimer founded Index Securities in 1976, the predecessor of Index Ventures. That securities business predates the venture firm’s 1996 founding and represents a distinct stage in its history.[1]

Founding in Geneva

Neil Rimer, Giuseppe Zocco and David Rimer founded Index Ventures in Geneva in 1996. Its early approach sought technology founders across Europe while maintaining links to the United States, rather than confining opportunities to Silicon Valley.[2]

London office

Index opened its London office in 2002. Danny Rimer’s arrival helped drive the expansion, bringing the firm closer to an emerging European technology hub and founders and investors moving between Europe and the United States.[2]

San Francisco expansion

In 2011, Index opened in San Francisco to deepen US investing and support companies expanding internationally. Its retrospective identifies leading Dropbox’s Series B that year as an important step in establishing credibility in the American market.[2]

Neil Rimer steps back from an active partner role

Neil Rimer stepped down as an active partner in 2021. His official biography identifies him as a Retired Partner who continues managing his portion of the portfolio and supporting colleagues and the firm.[3]

New York office

Index opened its New York office in 2022, further connecting European and US markets. Its subsequent firm descriptions identify San Francisco, London and New York as principal office locations.[2]

$2.3 billion in new funds

On July 10, 2024, Index announced an $800 million twelfth venture fund and a $1.5 billion seventh growth fund, totaling $2.3 billion. These are newly raised fund commitments, not the firm’s total assets under management.[4]

New capital and growth-fund expansion

The July 31, 2026 financing comprised a $400 million seed fund, a $900 million venture fund and a $700 million addition to the 2024 growth fund: $2 billion of new capital. Material accompanying a November interview with Shardul Shah put combined investing capacity at $3.5 billion, including the earlier growth fund rather than only the new commitments.[5]
