Key facts
1954Puerto Rican roots
Ángel Ramos founded Puerto Rico’s WKAQ-TV in 1954. Smithsonian broadcasting archives connect that station to Telemundo’s history, but its launch date is distinct from the formation of the later U.S. national network.[2]
1984–1987From NetSpan to Telemundo
According to Smithsonian archives, New York-area station WNJU joined two other Spanish-language stations to form NetSpan in 1984. The network became Telemundo in 1987 and added affiliates. The earlier station history, network formation and renaming are separate milestones.[2]
1993–1994Bankruptcy reorganization
The FCC’s 1994 order records a Chapter 11 filing in August 1993 and court confirmation of a reorganization plan on July 20, 1994. The plan exchanged debt for equity. On December 23, the FCC approved transfers of control of the licensed subsidiaries, with conditions or waivers addressing certain overlapping ownership interests.[3]
1998Sony and Liberty reshape programming
The Los Angeles Business Journal reported that Sony Pictures Entertainment and Liberty Media acquired Telemundo in August 1998, then introduced more sitcoms, action shows and Spanish-language adaptations of U.S. programs. Entertainment president Nely Galan described an audience living between two languages and cultures. The strategy emerged while Telemundo still substantially trailed Univision in audience share.[4]
2002NBC completes its acquisition
GE confirmed in an April 16, 2002 release that NBC completed its acquisition of Telemundo Communications Group on April 12. Telemundo expanded NBC’s Spanish-language programming and local-station operations. The closing date is distinct from the earlier agreement and subsequent debt-tender deadline.[5][6]
2004Spanish-language Olympic coverage
Telemundo participated in NBCUniversal’s coverage of the 2004 Athens Olympics. NBCUniversal’s corporate history describes its Spanish-language telecasts as the first non-English Olympic coverage in the United States, illustrating the network’s role in the group’s sports distribution.[6]
2011World Cup rights
In October 2011, Telemundo secured U.S. Spanish-language media rights to the 2018 and 2022 men’s World Cups. TheWrap reported a roughly $600 million bid, citing a person familiar with the process. That amount is a reported figure rather than a publicly disclosed contract term.[7]
2017Performers organize
On March 8, 2017, eligible Telemundo performers voted for SAG-AFTRA representation. The union subsequently reported support from 81% of votes cast and began pursuing a first agreement covering Spanish-language scripted productions in the United States, including Puerto Rico. The percentage did not describe all company employees.[8][9]
2018Miami headquarters
On April 9, 2018, NBCUniversal celebrated the opening of Telemundo Center, its new global headquarters in Miami. The campus brought news, sports, entertainment production and associated digital operations together, supporting shared production resources across divisions.[10]
2018First performers’ agreement
On July 21, 2018, SAG-AFTRA’s national board approved its first three-year agreement with Telemundo Television Studios. It established minimum pay, pension and health contributions, residual payments for reuse including streaming, and workplace protections, addressing performers’ campaign for formal labor standards in Spanish-language television.[11]
2023Luis Fernández appointed chairman
On December 5, 2023, NBCUniversal appointed Luis Fernández chairman of Telemundo Enterprises, succeeding Beau Ferrari. Fernández had led Noticias Telemundo before retiring in 2021. The appointment brought him back to a leadership role; the company’s May 2026 programming announcement continued to identify him as chairman.[12][13]
2024Expansion into free streaming news
Noticias Telemundo Ahora launched in May 2024 as a free, advertising-supported streaming news channel. The company’s year-end report placed it alongside the Telemundo app, Peacock and other digital outlets, extending news distribution beyond conventional television schedules.[14]
2024Audience performance and measurement
On December 19, 2024, Telemundo cited Nielsen data placing its regularly scheduled Monday–Sunday primetime lineup first among U.S. Spanish-language networks by total viewers. The measurement ran through December 15 and excluded sports and specials. It was not an unrestricted ranking across all dayparts, platforms or the complete calendar year.[14]
2025Updated contract and AI protections
On February 14, 2025, SAG-AFTRA ratified a four-year Telemundo agreement retroactive to October 1, 2024. It included higher pay and benefit contributions, safeguards concerning artificial intelligence, residuals for Peacock originals, and working-condition provisions including intimacy coordinators.[15]
2026Drama, reality and live programming
The May 2026 slate included season four of La Reina del Sur, season ten of El Señor de los Cielos and reality programming such as La Casa de los Famosos. It continued a mix of scripted production and live entertainment and announced the Christmas film La Vida Ideal. A slate announcement does not establish that every title had already aired.[13]
2026World Cup production and distribution
NBCUniversal’s July 23 review reported more than 700 hours of live Spanish-language World Cup programming. Of 104 matches, 92 aired over the air on Telemundo and 12 on Universo; all also streamed on Peacock and the Telemundo app. Production centered on Miami, using feeds from the tournament’s 16 host cities.[16]
2026Further soccer expansion
In September 29 interviews with Telemundo executives, The Current reported that the network acquired exclusive U.S. Spanish-language Serie A rights that month and was preparing to carry the Champions League from 2027. Sports content executive Miguel Lorenzo discussed those plans alongside Premier League, Bundesliga and Los Angeles Olympics coverage. Champions League coverage remained a future commitment.[17]
2026NBC News–Telemundo Latino voter poll
An NBC News–Telemundo poll released October 4 found that 27% of registered Latino voters surveyed approved of Trump’s performance and 69% disapproved. Congressional preferences were 59% Democratic and 35% Republican. These figures measured attitudes at the time, not midterm election results.[18]
Poll sample and method
The September 21–28 survey interviewed 800 registered Latino voters by telephone and text-invited online responses; 20% were interviewed in Spanish. Its reported margin of error was ±3.1 percentage points. Hart Research Associates and Public Opinion Strategies conducted the poll; its population was not all Latino residents.[18]
2026Election reporting and public information
On October 8, Telemundo launched Decisión 2026, combining candidate interviews, national and local polling, voting information and bilingual information phone banks. The company described the initiative as nonpartisan and announced a community forum in McAllen, Texas, for October 29. As of October 11, that forum was still forthcoming.[19]
2026Distribution footprint and ownership
In its October 8 release, Telemundo reported distribution through 30 owned and 95 affiliate stations in 210 markets, reaching 96% of U.S. Hispanic television households. These were company-reported distribution figures, not measured viewers. Its wider business also includes Universo, the Telemundo app, free streaming channels and Peacock distribution.[19]
