Key facts
2018Founded as Greenfield One
Greenfield was founded in Berlin in 2018 by venture capitalist Sebastian Blum and serial founder Jascha Samadi. It was originally named Greenfield One and was an early-stage crypto fund; the “One” in its name reflected the positioning of its early-stage fund. Its first investment vehicle was launched in early 2019.[1][2][1]
2019–2020First Investments and Second Fund
In May 2019, Greenfield announced that it had taken part in Celo’s $30 million financing led by a16z and Polychain, describing it as one of its first investments; in July of the same year it announced that it had joined Pantera Capital, Multicoin Capital, Coinbase Ventures and others in NEAR’s $12.1 million financing round. At the time it described its approach as long-term bets on early developer teams building an open, decentralized architecture for the web.[3][3][4][4]
It went on to become the first investor in 1inch and the first institutional investor in Sovryn, was an early investor in Celo, and has long held a position in Flow, the blockchain developed by Dapper Labs. At the end of 2020 it announced the first closing of its second fund, with a target size of 50 million euros; the fund was later closed early.[1][1][1][1][1]

October 6, 2022Renamed Greenfield Capital
On October 6, 2022, Greenfield One announced that it was renaming itself Greenfield Capital, with a new pixelated logo and the new domain greenfieldcapital.com. The firm explained that dropping the “One” reflected its interest in later-stage and special-topic investment opportunities and plans for new investment vehicles; it said it preferred to be regarded as an “investment firm” rather than simply a venture capital fund. At the time its offices were in Berlin and Hamburg, with team members also working remotely from Munich, Frankfurt, London, Warsaw and Lisbon.[2][2][2][2][2]
April 2024Annual Report on Safe
On April 12, 2024, Greenfield published a 2023 report on Safe, stating that more than $100 billion in assets were held in Safe smart accounts; on the 24th of that month it published another article reiterating its investment thesis, describing Safe as critical infrastructure and the most widely used industry standard for securely managing digital assets.[9][10][10]
December 2, 2024Co-Authoring SEP 50
On December 2, 2024, Greenfield Capital and Avantgarde Finance jointly put forward SEP 50 on the SafeDAO forum, proposing a three-member Treasury Management Steering Committee to set goals and strategy for the DAO’s treasury management, create a framework for selecting and removing treasury managers, and reserve one seat for the Safe Ecosystem Foundation. The proposal noted that nearly all assets in the SafeDAO on-chain treasury were denominated in its native token, SAFE.[11][11][11][11][11][11]
April 2026Genesis Validator on Safenet
In April 2026, Safe’s transaction security network Safenet launched in beta, with Greenfield as one of six genesis validators alongside Gnosis, Safe Labs, Rockaway, Blockchain Capital and Core Contributors GmbH, each staking at least 3.5 million SAFE. Greenfield says its validator ranks second by delegations, behind Gnosis.[12][13]
October 4, 2026Supervisory Complaint over the Safe Ecosystem Foundation
On October 4, 2026, Greenfield founding partner Jascha Samadi published an open letter on the SafeDAO forum stating that Greenfield had that week filed a supervisory complaint (Aufsichtsanzeige) concerning the Safe Ecosystem Foundation with the Swiss Federal Supervisory Authority for Foundations (ESA). The letter stressed that this was not a lawsuit against individuals or an attempt to take control of Safe, but a request for the supervisor to examine whether the foundation’s governance is acceptable; Greenfield said it had never sold a single SAFE token and had never requested a board seat for itself.[13][13][13][13][13]
The letter asserts that the foundation board lacks independent members, and that Gnosis co-founder Stefan GeorgeStefan GeorgeStefan George is a German blockchain developer and entrepreneur, co-founder and chief technology officer of the Ethereum project Gnosis. The multi-signature wallet he wrote to custody the proceeds of Gnosis’s 2017 token sale later evolved into Safe, and since 2022 he has served on the council of the Safe Ecosystem Foundation.Open the full entry’s seat on the board is a conflict of interest because Gnosis developed, launched and operated two wallet products that competed directly with Safe{Wallet}. Greenfield says that from the end of 2025 it asked the foundation, verbally and through letters from its counsel, to restructure its governance, replace Stefan George and add independent external board members, and that every request was rejected by the foundation through its counsel.[13][13][13][13]
The letter further states that Greenfield learned from several stakeholders that shortly after the Bybit theft in February 2025, Stefan George and fellow Gnosis co-founder Martin KöppelmannMartin KöppelmannMartin Köppelmann is a co-founder of the Ethereum project Gnosis and chief executive officer of Gnosis Ltd. He and Stefan George first developed a Bitcoin prediction market before founding Gnosis under Consensys; after the 2025 Bybit theft he was appointed an adviser to the Safe Ecosystem Foundation.Open the full entry demanded that Safe’s other board members and co-founders give up a significant portion of their SAFE, under the threat that Gnosis would otherwise sell its entire SAFE position of roughly 10% of total supply and publicly distance itself from the project; Greenfield says the others gave in and the redistribution took place, and that these events were “reported and subsequently confirmed” by different sources, but the letter does not name those sources.[13][13][13][13]
On the board’s size, the letter states that the foundation’s deed requires at least three board members but that it had only two between September 2025 and April 2026, and that the vacancy was filled with Safe co-founder Richard MeissnerRichard MeissnerRichard Meissner is a German software engineer, co-founder of the smart contract account protocol Safe and author of the Safe smart contracts in use today. He has served as Safe’s chief technology officer and now leads Safe Research, and since 2026 he has been a member of the council of the Safe Ecosystem Foundation.Open the full entry rather than an independent member. Swiss commercial register records show that Christoph SimmchenChristoph SimmchenChristoph Simmchen is a German capital markets and corporate lawyer who joined Gnosis as an early employee in 2017 and later became a co-founder of the smart contract account protocol Safe; from 2022 to 2025 he was vice president of the council of the Safe Ecosystem Foundation.Open the full entry’s departure was published on September 1, 2025, and Richard Meissner’s registration as a board member was published on March 9, 2026.[13][13][14][14][14][14]
October 5–11, 2026Responses
Safe Ecosystem Foundation spokesperson Samuel Akpan told CointelegraphCointelegraphCointelegraph is a digital news outlet covering blockchain, digital assets, artificial intelligence, and fintech, known for its cartoon-style news illustrations. It also runs businesses including Cointelegraph Magazine, research, an accelerator, and events.Open the full entry that the foundation had not received a formal inquiry from the ESA and declined to comment on the details of the potential complaint. As of October 14, 2026, no public response to the allegations from Gnosis, Stefan George or Martin Köppelmann had been seen.[15]
On the forum, a user who had worked at Gnosis for three years, Marcelo Ruiz de Olano of KPK, LongHash Ventures, Igor Barinov of Blockscout and Gonçalo, formerly of Consensys, defended Stefan George’s character and contributions; Marcelo Ruiz de Olano noted that the allegations rested on unnamed sources, and Gonçalo implied that Greenfield had other motives. LongHash Ventures and Igor Barinov also said they supported adding independent board members.[13][13][13][13][13][13][13]
On October 11, 2026, Jascha Samadi replied that Greenfield was not saying the individuals concerned were bad or malicious people; the question was whether the board’s conduct after Bybit was compatible with the responsibilities of a board seat, and that question had been put to the supervisory authority. To those questioning Greenfield’s motives, he asked them to assume for a moment that the facts in the letter were true and consider what the appropriate consequence would be.[13][13][13][13]
