Early Life: Wrestling, Princeton, and the Army
Novogratz was a wrestler in high school and was a Virginia state runner-up; at Princeton University he continued to compete for the varsity team, reaching the round of 12 at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Princeton University and served as a helicopter pilot in the United States Army. As of April 2026, he was 61 years old.[1][2][2]

Before joining Fortress, Novogratz spent 11 years at Goldman Sachs, where he was elected partner in 1998.[2]
2002Joining Fortress Investment Group
In 2002, Novogratz joined the alternative asset manager Fortress Investment Group, where he founded its liquid markets business, later served as a partner and president, and was chief investment officer of its flagship macro hedge fund, Fortress Macro Fund. From 2012 to 2015, he also served on the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Investment Advisory Committee on Financial Markets.[2][3][3][2]
2007–2012Promoting Wrestling
In 2007, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame named Novogratz an “Outstanding American.” He has long been a leader and major financial supporter of Beat the Streets, a program promoting wrestling in New York City schools, organizing fundraising events: an all-star dual on the aircraft carrier Intrepid in 2010 raised $800,000, and a USA vs. Russia dual meet in Times Square in 2011 raised over $1 million. From 2009 to 2012, he served as team leader for the U.S. freestyle wrestling team, leading it at the 2011 World Championships in Istanbul and the 2012 London Olympics. October 13, 2015Fortress Macro Fund Closes
On October 13, 2015, Fortress announced that it would close the approximately $2.3 billion Fortress Macro Fund and related managed separate accounts, aiming to return all investor capital by the end of the year; the fund had lost more than 17% that year as of the end of September. Novogratz announced that he would retire from Fortress and its board at year-end, saying the past two years had been extremely challenging and the current environment was not conducive to achieving the best results. His tenure as a partner and president of Fortress ended on January 4, 2016.[3][3][3][3][3][2]
December 2017Becoming CEO of Galaxy Digital
After leaving Fortress, Novogratz first founded the family office Galaxy Investment Partners and then founded Galaxy Digital, serving as its chief executive officer since December 2017. After the company completed its listing in July 2018, he became chairman of Galaxy Digital Holdings Ltd.; Michael Daffey succeeded him as chair in September 2021, and he remained a director until May 2025.[2][2][2][2]
November 2020–May 2022Promoting LUNA and the Tattoo
In October 2020, Galaxy bought LUNA from Terraform Labs at a discount, and from November of that year Novogratz publicly promoted LUNA and Terraform on podcasts and social media. His Twitter following grew from over 150,000 in December 2020 to over 330,000 in December 2021. On March 26, 2021, he posted that he would get a LUNA tattoo if LUNA reached $100; after LUNA passed $100 on December 24, 2021, he publicly unveiled the tattoo on January 4, 2022, showing a wolf howling at the moon with the word “Luna.” In May 2022, LUNA collapsed, wiping out more than $40 billion of market value within a few days. March 27, 2025Galaxy’s LUNA Settlement With New York
On March 27, 2025, the New York Attorney General’s office entered into a settlement with five Galaxy companies. The office found that Galaxy sold its LUNA holdings while promoting LUNA without disclosing its intent to sell, and that the companies, through Novogratz’s actions, violated New York’s General Business Law and Executive Law; the respondents were those companies, and Novogratz himself was not among them. Galaxy neither admitted nor denied the findings and agreed to pay $200 million in disgorgement in installments. Novogratz said that Do Kwon and Terraform had deceived Galaxy and many other prominent institutional investors, and that Galaxy had cooperated fully with regulators.[4][4][4][4][4][4][4][5]
May 2025Director of Galaxy Digital Inc.
After Galaxy completed its reorganization moving its domicile from the Cayman Islands to Delaware in May 2025, Novogratz became a director of the surviving public company, Galaxy Digital Inc., while continuing as chief executive officer. As of April 2, 2026, he held his stake mainly through Galaxy Group Investments LLC, which he controls, giving him about 49.25% of the company’s total voting power.[2][2][2][2]
October 2026Calling AI the “Biggest Bubble of Our Lifetime”
The Greenwich Economic Forum held its ninth annual conference in Greenwich, Connecticut, from October 5 to 7, 2026. Speaking there, Novogratz said the AI trade is the “biggest bubble of our lifetime,” but that it is not yet time to stop investing, and encouraged investors to capitalize on the trend. “I know how bubbles end, and they end spectacularly, and this isn’t spectacular enough,” he said.[6][7][8][7]
Criminal Justice Reform and Philanthropy
Novogratz is chairman of The Bail Project, a bail assistance organization, and his family’s foundation focuses on criminal justice reform. As of April 2026, he was also a board member of Beat the Streets, the Jazz Foundation of America, and the REFORM Alliance; he also sits on the Board of Overseers at NYU Langone Medical Center.[9][2][9]
