Key facts
2016Foundation
December 2018Hawthorne Test Tunnel
The company records completion of its 1.14-mile Hawthorne test tunnel in December 2018 at a cost below $10 million. It is an R&D and vehicle-testing facility; its test speeds do not establish normal operating speeds on public Loop services.[5]
April 2021Convention Center Operations
The company dates the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop’s opening to the Mecum Motorcycle Auction in April 2021. The initial system had 1.7 miles of tunnels and three stations, built under an approximately $47 million fixed-price contract.[6]

December 2022Steve Davis and Twitter’s Data Center Move
Walter Isaacson’s 2023 biography excerpt describes Musk’s Christmas 2022 relocation of Twitter servers from Sacramento, with Steve Davis arranging trucks and moving vans. It reports more than 700 racks moved in three working days, the remainder in January, subsequent instability, and Musk’s later admission of error. This describes cross-company management activity rather than a regular TBC tunneling project.[8][4]
2024Convention Center Expansion
TBC lists the expanded convention center system in 2024 as 2.1 miles with five stations, adding Riviera and Central Plaza. This convention center service forms part of the wider Vegas Loop network.[6]
July 2025Nashville Project Announced
On July 28, 2025, Tennessee’s governor and TBC announced Music City Loop, initially described as a privately financed underground connection between downtown Nashville and its international airport. The opening timetable was a projection; routes, approvals and construction progress required subsequent confirmation.[9]
November 2025Nevada Safety Enforcement Dispute
Nevada’s business department said in November 2025 that citations in inspection 1799833 were withdrawn for legal insufficiency and denied preferential-treatment instructions from the governor’s office. It acknowledged recordkeeping problems and separately reported eight citations from another inspection before the independent review board. These case statuses must be distinguished.[10]
February 2026Dubai Loop Agreement
On February 3, 2026, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority announced an implementation agreement with TBC. The pilot would connect DIFC and Dubai Mall through 6.4 kilometers and four stations; the wider plan covered 22.2 kilometers and 19 stations. Estimated costs were AED565 million for the pilot and AED2 billion for the full project.[11]
February 2026Federal Review Findings
Federal OSHA’s February 12, 2026 review of inspection 1799833 found reasonable grounds to withdraw the willful citations because the required legal standard was unmet. It also substantiated removal and alteration of case-file material and recommended better legal consultation, decision records and file procedures. Nevada said it had implemented improvements. The review did not dispose of citations in other cases.[12][13][10]
February 18, 2026Nashville Airport Letter of Intent
On February 18, 2026, Nashville’s airport authority approved a letter of intent with TBC to advance an airport–downtown connection. The announcement concerned proposed licensing arrangements and subsequent work, rather than an already completed or operating airport station.[14]
February 25, 2026State Right-of-Way Permit
On February 25, 2026, Tennessee announced approval of TBC’s state right-of-way lease application and enhanced grading permit following state and federal highway review, allowing construction to begin. The approval covered the relevant right-of-way and work; it did not establish completion of every station’s design and permitting.[15][16]
March 2026Nashville Council Opposition
Nashville’s Metropolitan Council adopted resolution RS2025-1712 on March 3, 2026, opposing Music City Loop over unresolved safety, labor, transparency, environmental, geological and community-engagement concerns. It requested public studies, independent review and briefings. The mayor returned it unsigned on March 5. The resolution records the council’s position, not a court ruling or cancellation of the project.[17]
September 2026$3 Billion Series D
On September 9, 2026, TBC announced a $3 billion Series D at a $23 billion valuation, led by the UAE and affiliated entities. Investors included Human Capital, Vy, Valor, Sequoia, a16z, Temasek, Shamal and Baron. It also announced a partnership planning over 150 additional kilometers of UAE tunnels, rather than completed infrastructure.[18]
September 2026Austin–San Antonio Proposal
On September 20, 2026, TBC responded on X to Musk’s Austin–San Antonio tunnel proposal, expressing willingness to build it and suggesting a roughly half-hour direct trip if both destinations had Loop stations. The post stated an aspiration, not evidence of permits, construction or an operating service.[19]
October 2026Music City Loop Construction
TBC’s October 1, 2026 update said Prufrock-MB1 and MB2 were tunneling in Nashville, MB3 was scheduled to launch in late October, and MB4 was being built, with four machines targeted by year-end. Airport-station design and permitting remained underway. Construction status is distinct from full passenger service.[16]
October 2026Engineering Education and Student Competitions
On October 10, 2026, TBC described its engineers teaching a University of Austin applied-engineering class at the factory, where student teams designed and built obstacle-course rovers. Its LinkedInLinkedInLinkedIn is a social networking platform for professionals. It was founded in 2002 by Reid Hoffman and others, launched in 2003, and listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2011; after Microsoft acquired it for approximately $26.2 billion in 2016, it became a wholly owned Microsoft subsidiary. Its revenue comes from membership subscriptions, advertising, and recruitment solutions.Open the full entry updates also documented eight teams visiting Prufrock operations and the factory during the 2026 Not-a-Boring student competition.[20][2]
As of October 2026: Vegas Loop Operations and Expansion
As checked in October 2026, TBC’s website reported more than four million cumulative Vegas Loop passenger trips and 14 stations, against an approved network plan of 68 miles and 123 stations. It also listed airport connections. Ridership is company-reported, and the 123 approved stations should not be confused with operating stations.[21]
Loop Service and Safety Design
Loop uses Tesla electric vehicles for direct trips between stations, which TBC contrasts with services stopping at every station. Its described safety features include ventilation, emergency exits, monitoring and an operations control center; design descriptions do not replace regulatory inspection findings. The Nashville project’s stated model still includes trained drivers.[22][23]
Prufrock Tunneling Machines
Prufrock is designed for angled launches from the surface, continuous excavation and lining, and remote monitoring from Bastrop. TBC states targets of one mile per week and all-in Loop tunnel costs below $5 million per mile; these are not proof that every project achieves those results. Prufrock-MB addresses harder rock.[24]
Automation and Equipment Development
TBC reported demonstrations of continuous mining with full-ring installation without underground personnel in May 2025 and remotely monitored automatic ring-building in August 2026. These demonstrations do not establish unmanned operation across all worksites.[18]
Research Tunnels and the Hyperloop Distinction
TBC’s research tunnels in Hawthorne, Adelanto and Bastrop test surface launch and retrieval, lining segments and automated controls. Some Bastrop facilities also support Hyperloop testing. Research facilities and proof-of-concept work should be distinguished from today’s public electric-vehicle Loop services.[5][22]
