Key facts

Founding

Blume Ventures was founded in 2010 by angel investors Karthik Reddy and Sanjay Nath with a mission to reimagine startup financing in India: a firm that could move with the speed of an angel investor while being institutionalized in its approach, bridging the gap between local angel networks and larger global venture capital firms.[1][1][1]

Fund I

Blume started in 2011 as a “Superangel” fund. Its first fund (2011–2014) closed at ₹100 crore (about $22 million at then exchange rates), raised almost entirely from domestic investors. Fund I invested in 47 startups, primarily at the pre-seed stage with cheques of $200,000–300,000, across consumer (Purplle, TaxiForSure, Intrcity), enterprise SaaS (Mettl, IDfy, ZipDial) and deep tech (GreyOrange, Carbon Clean).[2][3][3][3]

First Exits

Early investments began to exit: missed-call marketing platform ZipDial was acquired by Twitter and taxi aggregator TaxiForSure was acquired by Ola, with both investments held from 2011 or 2012 to 2015.[4][4]

Fund II

The second fund (2015–2017) was $60 million (about ₹400 crore at then exchange rates) and for the first time brought in international institutional limited partners; cheque sizes rose to $400,000–750,000, turning Blume into a seed-stage fund. Fund II invested in 41 companies, including Unacademy, Slice and Spinny, which later became unicorns, as well as Servify, smallcase and Locus.[3][3][3][3]

Mettl Acquired by Mercer

Talent assessment platform Mettl, one of Fund I’s earliest investments (made in 2011), was acquired by consulting firm Mercer in 2018, becoming Blume’s largest cash exit at the time; Blume said it returned over 15x on its seed position and over 7x in aggregate including its Series A follow-on.[4][5][5][5]

Fund III

The third fund (2018–2020) reached a final close of $102 million, and Blume evolved from a pure seed fund into a seed to pre-Series A fund, writing cheques of $750,000 to $2.3 million; early winners included Classplus, LambdaTest, Euler, Leverage, Jai Kisan and Pixxel. In 2018 Blume managed about $80 million.[3][3][3][6]

Secondary Fund 1X With Avendus

Fund 1X, a secondary fund set up in partnership with Avendus, closed at ₹350 crore (against a ₹300 crore target, oversubscribed) to acquire positions in six Fund I companies—GreyOrange, Purplle, Turtlemint, Exotel, IDfy and WebEngage—giving Fund I investors gross cash returns of over 2x while new investors could hold the positions for another four to five years. Karthik Reddy said capital markets had been harsh on some of the best Fund I founders and that Blume wanted to keep backing them as they grew.[7][7][7][7][7]

Rebranding

Blume changed its logo and brand identity; the new logo is a half-bloomed blue flower with a star in the middle representing its portfolio companies. By then it managed over $400 million and had three unicorns in its portfolio.[6][6][6][6][6]

Fund IV Closes

Blume announced the close of its fourth fund at over $250 million, above its $200 million target, bringing its assets under management to over $600 million; investors included Indian and overseas family offices, sovereign wealth funds and emerging-market funds of funds. Fund IV planned to invest in 30–35 companies and is managed by an investment team led by Sajith Pai, Arpit Agarwal, Ashish Fafadia, Sanjay Nath and Karthik Reddy. Later announcements and the fund page give Fund IV’s size as about $290 million, with early breakouts including EV battery-swapping company Battery Smart and exporter SaaS Sourcewiz.[2][2][2][2][8][3]

First Close of Continuity Fund 1Y

Blume announced the first close of Fund 1Y, its third growth fund, having raised ₹200 crore of a ₹400 crore target; part of the capital is used to buy stakes in companies such as Intrcity, Cashify, Carbon Clean and Zopper from Fund I and allied vehicles, and the rest to invest in winners from its other funds. Blume had also raised opportunity funds in 2018 and 2022 to double down on companies such as Exotel, GreyOrange, smallcase, Slice, Unacademy and WebEngage. Karthik Reddy said Blume was one of the first VCs in India to execute this structure with the new investors also being onshore.[8][8][8][8][8]

First Close of Fund V

Marking its 15th anniversary, Blume announced the initial close of its flagship Fund V at $175 million, targeting a final close of $250–275 million by early 2026; initial investments included health-tech Mave Health, B2B AI Confido Health, consumer brands Lucira and Ozi, fintech PowerUp Money and deep-tech iDO. Blume also expected aggregate distributions to investors of over $80 million across its funds in 2025, and portfolio company Turtlemint had filed its draft prospectus with regulators. Blume manages over $900 million in assets.[9][9][9][9][9][9][9]
