Edward Hughes
Overview
Edward Hughes works on rapid learning, cooperative AI and scientific discovery, alongside his role as co-director of Godwine Choir. He formerly co-led Google DeepMindGoogle DeepMindGoogle DeepMind is Google’s artificial intelligence research organization, formed in April 2023 by merging DeepMind, which Google acquired in 2014, with the Brain team from Google Research, and led by CEO Demis Hassabis. It developed AlphaGo, AlphaFold, and the Gemini family of models, and Hassabis and John Jumper received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold’s protein structure prediction work.Open the full entry’s AI Scientist team.[1]

Key facts
2014A New Choir
Founded in 2014, Godwine Choir lists Hughes and Alexander Davan Wetton as its musical directors.[2]
2017From Physics to AI
Hughes earned his PhD at Queen Mary University of London, studying CHY formulae and soft theorems in N=4 super Yang–Mills theory. The university records his subsequent appointment as a DeepMind research engineer.[3]
2018Cooperation Research
With Joel Z. Leibo and colleagues, he studied inequity aversion as a way to encourage cooperation in specific multi-agent games.[4]
2018First Recording
The choir released its first disc, Dream Tryst, featuring Holst and Dyson, including previously unrecorded works.[2]
2023AdA
On February 2, he described the team’s AdA, which used memory of earlier trials to adapt to unseen XLand 2.0 tasks without changing model weights. Demonstrations included exploring unfamiliar terrain and cooperating.[5]
February 2024Genie
Hughes contributed to Genie, a model learning from videos without action labels to generate controllable environments from images or sketches. The project demonstrated platform-game and robotics-video experiments.[6]
March 2024Visiting Appointment
LSE lists him as a visiting fellow in Psychological and Behavioural Science, appointed from March 2024 to February 2027.[7]
May 2026Inherent Emerges
On May 31, Index Ventures introduced Inherent’s cofounders—Tantum Collins, Hughes, Louis Kirsch and Kaloyan Aleksiev—and announced a $50 million seed round co-led with Radical VenturesRadical VenturesRadical Ventures is an artificial intelligence-focused venture capital firm founded by Jordan Jacobs and Tomi Poutanen shortly after the 2017 launch of the Vector Institute in Toronto. It invests from incubation and seed through growth and pre-IPO stages, and its portfolio includes companies such as Cohere, Waabi, and World Labs. In 2026, it co-led the investment in Discovery Loop, founded by Jeff Dean and others, and completed the first close of its late-stage Radical Breakouts Fund.Open the full entry.[8]
The team established a public benefit corporation, proposing human–AI collaboration in choosing research questions and improving research workflows across the laboratory. These are its research and governance aims.[9]
August 2026Faraday
On August 14, the lab introduced Faraday and Replica. Replica comprises 310 replication tasks from 100 papers; Faraday is trained with reinforcement learning and uses coding agents. The reported performance concerns these replication tasks.[10]
Research Advisory Work
The Cooperative AI Foundation lists Hughes as an advisor and identifies him as Inherent’s chief scientist. It supports research into cooperation among AI systems and between humans and AI.[11]
