Dot (OpenAI)
Dot is OpenAIOpenAIOpenAI is an artificial intelligence research and product organization founded in 2015 that develops the GPT model series, ChatGPT, Codex and a developer API, and conducts research on image, speech, video and intelligent agents. After its 2025 restructuring, the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation continues to control the for-profit OpenAI Group PBC. Its growth has involved large-scale fundraising and compute partnerships, and has also been accompanied by controversies over governance, copyright, privacy and AI safety.Open the full entry’s persistent agent in ChatGPT. Key facts
September 29, 2026Persistent Agent Introduced
OpenAI introduced Dot in its DevDay update. Users assign goals and define its autonomy; the agent works on its own computer and connected apps between conversations, returning results for review. It contacts the user when judgment is required. Access was rolling out gradually to eligible accounts.[1]
October 5–9, 2026Mobile Setup and Codex Work
The update enabled creating, naming and customizing a dot and connecting plugins on mobile. It expanded work with Codex threads, conversation context and automations, including changes to ChatGPT Work schedules. OpenAI also reported faster cloud browsing and fixes affecting notifications, setup and approval interfaces.[2]
October 12–16, 2026iOS Shortcuts and Widgets
A rollout with ChatGPT for iOS 1.2026.279 added a dot Home Screen widget and Shortcuts actions. Users could open messaging, dictation or a call, including through the Action button on supported iPhones. These entry points still required an account with dot access.[3]
October 26–30, 2026Texting Beta
OpenAI announced a texting beta rolling out to U.S. ChatGPT Pro users, supporting one-to-one text, photo and voice messages through iMessage or Android RCS. Dot chooses an update channel according to context, while users can express a preference. Approval requests link back to ChatGPT.[4]
As of October 2026: Runtime and Availability
Documentation describes Dot as powered by GPT-6 Astra and able to continue cloud work while the user is offline. Personal Pro access requires adulthood and excludes the EEA, U.K. and Switzerland. Business Premium is rolling out globally; Enterprise requires administrator enablement. Conversation and delegated-work usage are accounted for differently.[5]
As of October 2026: Separate Connections
Apps, messaging and computers require separate connections. Connecting one does not unlock the others. Dot supports mobile and desktop apps and desktop browsers, but not mobile web.[6]
As of October 2026: Ongoing and Scheduled Work
Dot delegates parallel work to Work or Codex. Schedules and notifications are separate; supported sources permit event triggers.[7]
As of October 2026: Memory and Proactive Research
Dot combines ChatGPT memory with separate notes. Changing memory does not erase those notes. Proactive research is read-only; cross-channel context does not authorize unrestricted disclosure.[7]
As of October 2026: Cloud and Personal Computers
Dot has a persistent cloud computer with files and a browser whose logins are separate from the user’s device. Users can take over or enter credentials privately. One personal computer can be connected at a time and must remain online with ChatGPT open. This connection is separate from Work sync and Codex access; app-account permissions still apply.[8]
As of October 2026: Review, Pause and Deletion
Activity shows delegated work and Scheduled manages recurring tasks. Custom rules do not extend permissions or override built-in safeguards. Pausing the main dot does not automatically stop delegated or scheduled work, which must be handled separately. Deleting a dot is irreversible and does not undo actions already completed in external apps.[9]
As of October 2026: Enterprise Administration
Enterprise administrators can govern dot access, local computers, cloud browsing, networks and credential management separately. Slack or Teams messaging identities are distinct from plugin permissions; Teams is documented as an invitation-only alpha. Enterprise business data is not used for model training by default, while residency and retention depend on workspace configuration.[10]
