Association for Human Mathematics
Overview
The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) is an organization in the mathematical research community. It seeks to preserve mathematics as a human endeavor and the community’s independence from commercial interests. It argues that AI tools can harm mathematical understanding and education, and organizes working groups to develop responses.[1]

September 2026Association Announcement
On September 12, 2026, the association’s communications group announced an organization run collectively by mathematicians at different career stages.[2]
October 7, 2026Response to OpenAI Mathematical Manuscripts
AHM issued a statement about OpenAIOpenAIOpenAI is an artificial intelligence research and product organization founded in 2015 that develops the GPT model series, ChatGPT, Codex and a developer API, and conducts research on image, speech, video and intelligent agents. After its 2025 restructuring, the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation continues to control the for-profit OpenAI Group PBC. Its growth has involved large-scale fundraising and compute partnerships, and has also been accompanied by controversies over governance, copyright, privacy and AI safety.Open the full entry’s October 6 release of mathematical manuscripts, questioning its implications for research norms and urging mathematicians to discontinue work with OpenAI. This is the association’s position, not a consensus of mathematicians.[3]
As of October 26, 2026: Public Membership List
AHM’s public membership page listed 1,008 members, including 654 in the optional AI-free caucus. The page says the list is updated approximately weekly; the figures are a snapshot, not a fixed total.[4]
Membership and Shared Commitments
Membership is free and open to the mathematical research community at graduate level and above. Members commit not to provide technical labor, mathematical knowledge, consultation or publicity to commercial AI companies, and not to publish AI-generated mathematical texts.[4]
Optional AI-Free Caucus
The AI-free caucus is an optional subgroup. Participants additionally commit not to use AI models in research to find proofs, explore examples or pose questions; this extra commitment does not apply to every AHM member.[5]
Working Groups
The association’s communications group says participation in working groups is voluntary. It identifies teaching, hiring practices and journal policies as central areas, with members developing proposals and tools for departments, journals and professional organizations.[2]
Different Views in Mathematics
Views on AI differ across the mathematical community. Nature Machine Intelligence describes enthusiasm for tools that help discover relationships, assist research and verify proofs, alongside concerns about low-quality generated material, commercial incentives, disclosure and recognition of human contributions. The association’s commitments reflect its members’ position, not a rule for all mathematicians.[6]
