Early Years: Learning to Program

Peak XV's interview introduction says Sanger began programming at 14 and traces Cursor's origins to his interest in AI.[1]

Education and Squash

Sanger graduated from Horace Mann in 2018. MIT lists him as a computer science student and squash player who helped win the 2019 CSA Division C title.[2]

His university biography also records internships at Google, Bridgewater and Gamalon, computational biology research, and the Abelian AI consultancy.[2]

From CAD Experiments Toward Programming

In his Latent Space interview, Sanger recalled exploring AI-assisted CAD with schoolmate Michael Truell in June 2022, then changing direction because of data and spatial-reasoning limitations.[3]

Introducing Cursor

The interview dates Cursor's public introduction to January 2023; Sanger said early access to GPT-4 prompted the team to rethink the programming interface.[3]

Analyzing Inference Costs

In a signed article, Sanger compared Llama-2-70B and GPT-3.5 inference costs and latency, distinguishing prompt processing from output generation under the conditions examined at the time.[4]

Describing Fast Apply

His Cursor article described the team's fast-apply model, separating planning from applying changes and using speculative edits to accelerate file rewrites.[5]

Discussing Low-Latency Editing

In the Lex Fridman episode published that day, Sanger joined Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif and Arvid Lunnemark to discuss Cursor. He explained the role of sparse models, speculative edits and caching in low-latency editing.[6]

Company Development

Investor Accel announced that it was co-leading Cursor’s $2.3 billion Series D and described its expansion from an editor into agents, code review and other development tools.[7]

A Change in Model Supply

OpenAI announced its intention to wind down its model-supply contract with Cursor, proposing November 12, 2026 as the shutoff date. As of October 16, 2026, this remained a future arrangement.[9]

Public Professional Identity

In the October 2026 check, Sanger's X biography said he was building SpaceXAI and identified him as a Cursor founder.[10]
