Charlotte Mason

Mason 本名 Charlotte Maria Shaw Mason，1842年1月1日生於威爾士 Bangor，早年主要在家接受父母的教育。⁠[1][1]

1860年，Mason 到倫敦，進入 Home and Colonial School Society 的師資培訓學校；此後在 Worthing 的 Davison School 任教十餘年。⁠[1][2][3]

1874年至1878年，Mason 在 Chichester 的 Bishop Otter College 任教，培訓女子師範生。⁠[2][1]

1886年，Mason 出版論述家庭教育的著作 Home Education，此書後來多次再版；她就同一主題所作的公開演講也在中產階級家長中引起反響。⁠[3]

1887年，受 Mason 教育方法影響的八十多人在 Bradford 集會，成立家長教育團體 Parents’ Educational Union，後來更名為 Parents’ National Educational Union（PNEU）。⁠[3][1]

1890年，Mason 創辦月刊 Parents’ Review，並任主編。⁠[1][2]

1891年，在 Lady Aberdeen 的勸說下，Mason 決定開辦家庭教師培訓學校，並遷居 Ambleside。1892年1月，她創辦的 House of Education 在 Rydal Road 的 Springfield 開學，首批學生4人；1894年，學校主體遷到對面的 Scale How。⁠[3][4][3][5]

1923年1月16日，Mason 在 Scale How 的 House of Education 去世，終年81歲，葬於 Ambleside 的 St Mary’s Church 墓園。⁠[6][7][7][1]

Mason 去世後，學校於1938年更名 Charlotte Mason College；1961年納入國家師資培訓體系，1990年代併入 Lancaster University，1990年代末由 St Martin’s College 接管，校址今為 University of Cumbria 的 Ambleside 校區。⁠[5][7]

Mason 主張為所有兒童提供廣博的通識課程，不論其社會階層；課程從一開始就讓兒童接觸自然、詩歌、藝術、音樂、手工、民間故事與傳說，並重視兒童與古今人物建立聯繫。她的方法後來受到在家教育者推崇。⁠[1][6][1]

Mason 編寫的一套學校地理課本頗受歡迎。她的教育著作還包括 Parents and Children（1896年）、School Education（1904年）、Ourselves, Our Souls and Bodies（1904年）與 Some Studies in the Formation of Character（1905年）。⁠[3][1]
