Charles Leatherland

Leatherland 1898年4月18日生於 Birmingham，14歲離開學校。第一次世界大戰爆發時他年僅16歲，虛報年齡加入 Royal Warwickshire Regiment 第16營，此後在比利時、法國和德國服役，1918年升任代理連軍士長。⁠[1][2][2]

1918年，Leatherland 加入工黨。⁠[3]

1921年，Leatherland 遷居 Macclesfield，在當地報紙 Macclesfield Courier 任首席記者兼副編輯，由此進入新聞業。⁠[4][1]

1924年，Leatherland 到倫敦任工黨新聞宣傳部議會通訊員，後成為黨新聞官 Will Henderson 的副手，負責撰寫黨的小冊子、為工黨議員起草講稿，並在下議院採訪議會議事。1925年，他為 The Book of the Labour Party 撰寫了11章。⁠[5][5][5]

1926年英國總罷工期間，Leatherland 撰寫了英國職工大會（TUC）罷工報紙 The British Worker 的大部分內容，包括每期頭版刊登的 Message to All Workers。⁠[5]

1929年，Leatherland 加入 Daily Herald 任政治副編輯，此後在該報工作34年：1938年任助理新聞編輯，1941年任新聞編輯，1950年代任夜班編輯，後任助理主編併兼任政治編輯，1963年退休。⁠[6][6]

1944年至1970年，Leatherland 任 Essex 的 Epping 治安法庭副主席。⁠[1]

Leatherland 曾任 Laindon 與 Billericay 的區議員，1946年成為 Essex County Council 參事（Alderman）。他在郡議會共22年，其中15年任工黨黨團領袖，並曾主持財政委員會、任副主席6年。⁠[7][7]

1964年12月16日，Leatherland 經首相 Harold Wilson 提名，受封聯合王國終身男爵，稱號為 Baron Leatherland, of Dunton, in the county of Essex，進入上議院。⁠[8][1]

1973年，University of Essex 授予 Leatherland 榮譽博士學位。⁠[1]

1992年12月，Leatherland 在 Essex 的 Epping 去世。⁠[1][9]

1960年代初英國政府決定增設大學時，Leatherland 積極爭取把新大學設在 Essex，並在 University of Essex 的創辦中發揮主導作用，出任該校首任 Treasurer。他也是該校 Court 的終身成員。⁠[7][7][1]

Leatherland 在上議院有記錄的發言始於1965年2月3日關於醫院與醫療服務的辯論，最後一次記錄為1990年12月13日。他還曾任 Basildon 新城開發公司和壟斷委員會（Monopolies Commission）成員。⁠[9][1]
