Graduates from Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Yuchen Jin received his bachelor’s degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2015 and went on to pursue a PhD in computer science and engineering at the University of Washington, advised by Arvind Krishnamurthy in the Systems Lab; his research interests include machine learning systems, AutoML, computer networks, and distributed systems.[1][1][1]

Internships and Papers During His PhD

During his PhD he interned at MicrosoftMicrosoftMicrosoft is a technology company founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975 and headquartered in Redmond, Washington, with businesses spanning Windows, Microsoft 365, Azure, enterprise software, artificial intelligence, gaming and devices.Open the full entry Research in Redmond, Washington, from June to September 2017, at ByteDance AI Lab in Bellevue, Washington, from October 2018 to March 2019, and again at Microsoft Research from June to September 2020.[1][1][1]

His first-author papers include ProbLink, on inferring autonomous system (AS) relationships (NSDI 2019); a study of wide-area latencies to a global cloud provider (SIGCOMM 2019); and AutoLRS, which automatically schedules learning rates during training using Bayesian optimization (ICLR 2021). He also co-authored the SOSP 2019 paper on Nexus, a GPU cluster engine for video analysis.[1][1][1][1]

Co-Founds Hyperbolic

In 2022, he and math PhD Jasper Zhang co-founded Hyperbolic, a San Francisco-based AI compute platform, after many of their friends were unable to obtain enough GPUs to run their models; Zhang is chief executive and Jin chief technology officer. Hyperbolic buys unused GPU time from data centers and individual machines and sells it to developers, and also helps developers access open-source large language models such as MetaMetaMeta (Meta Platforms, Inc.) is a publicly listed American technology company, renamed from Facebook in 2021, that operates social communication, digital advertising, virtual reality, smart glasses and artificial intelligence businesses.Open the full entry’s Llama.[2][2][2][3][3]

Explaining the motivation, Jin said that understanding the scale of underutilized GPUs was a “eureka moment”: if AI models could run on consumer-grade hardware in a way that is both performant and affordable, the supply of compute available to developers and researchers worldwide could increase significantly. Hyperbolic’s founding story notes that there are more than two billion personal computers in the world, most of which sit idle for more than 19 hours a day.[3][3][3]

Hyperbolic Raises a Series A

OctoML and Apache TVM

He worked as a senior engineering manager and tech lead at the machine learning deployment company OctoML and was involved with the open-source deep learning compiler Apache TVM; he co-authored the ASPLOS 2025 paper Relax (composable abstractions for end-to-end dynamic machine learning), whose code was merged into Apache TVM. By his own account, OctoML later operated as OctoAI and was acquired by Nvidia.[1][4][1][1]

Recent Activities and the Muon Optimizer

Jin is one of the credited authors of the write-up on Muon, an optimizer for hidden layers in neural networks (with Keller Jordan as first author). As of October 2026, he describes himself on X as building AI systems and products at Databricks and lists co-founder and CTO of Hyperbolic as a previous role.[1][4]
