Key facts

Virgin Blue and rebranding

Virgin Blue began in 2000 with two aircraft and expanded domestic and international operations. The Virgin Australia brand introduced in 2011 consolidated names including Virgin Blue, V Australia, Pacific Blue and Polynesian Blue as the group repositioned its service.[1]

Administration and Bain Capital acquisition

Virgin Australia entered voluntary administration during the pandemic in 2020 and was subsequently acquired and restructured by Bain Capital. Its later operating and ownership structure therefore differs from the original Virgin Blue business.[2]
