The Canterbury Tales

The Canterbury Tales（《坎特伯雷故事集》）是英格蘭詩人Geoffrey Chaucer晚年創作而未完成的中古英語框架故事集，以一群朝聖者前往坎特伯雷途中輪流講故事為線索，借Hengwrt、Ellesmere等手稿及William Caxton的早期印本流傳至今。

約1387—1400年：創作與框架

The Canterbury Tales是Geoffrey Chaucer以中古英語寫成的框架故事集，寫作年代為1387—1400年，以前往坎特伯雷聖Thomas Becket聖祠的朝聖之旅為敘事框架，大部分以抑揚格五音步寫成。Poetry Foundation則將其年代標為約1375—1400年，並提到一種看法，認為Chaucer在14世紀90年代中期、即去世前五六年便停止了這部作品的寫作。⁠[1][2]

在故事框架中，二十九名朝聖者聚集在Southwark的Tabard旅店，旅店主人Harry Bailey決定同行並擔任領隊；按照約定，每位朝聖者講四個故事，去程兩個、回程兩個，講得最好的人在眾人返回Tabard時由其他人出資請吃一頓晚餐。⁠[3]

原計劃為三十名朝聖者各講四個、共120個故事，而Chaucer完成的部分不到原計劃的四分之一。講述者涵蓋從騎士到贖罪券商和教會法庭差役的中產階層人物，各人常借自己的故事回擊前一位講述者。⁠[2]

約1400—1410年：Chaucer去世與早期手稿

Chaucer於1400年10月25日去世，葬於威斯敏斯特修道院南耳堂聖Benedict禮拜堂入口處，該處後來被稱為“Poets’ Corner”（詩人角）。The Canterbury Tales在他生前沒有完成。⁠[4][2]

現藏威爾士國家圖書館的Hengwrt手稿是The Canterbury Tales早期而重要的手稿，可能寫成於14世紀末，即Chaucer去世之前或稍後。2004年，Linne Mooney教授認定其抄寫者為Adam Pinkhurst；現藏加州San Marino的Huntington圖書館的Ellesmere手稿也出自他手。⁠[5]

Ellesmere手稿是一部裝飾華美精細的The Canterbury Tales手稿，Huntington圖書館編號EL 26 C 9，年代約為1400—1410年，來自Bridgewater House圖書館；手稿中繪有一系列各故事講述者的插圖，其中包括著名的Chaucer騎馬像。⁠[6][7]

約1476—1477年：Caxton初版

William Caxton約於1476—1477年在威斯敏斯特印行The Canterbury Tales初版，使用其Westminster 2:135B號活字，為對開本，共374葉，年代系依據所用紙張推定；該版沒有木刻插圖。⁠[8][9]

Merton學院稱，這是Caxton在英格蘭印刷的第一部書，也就是在英格蘭印刷的第一部書；初版沒有序言，現存約21部，保存狀況不一。⁠[10]

1483年Caxton第二版

1483年，Caxton印行The Canterbury Tales第二版。他在新版序言中提及初版，講述一位“gentylman”（紳士）曾向他指出該書有誤，並提供其父所藏的一部抄本，稱該抄本“very true and according unto his own first book”（十分真確，與Chaucer本人的初稿相符）。⁠[10]

第二版以Caxton的“Proheyme”（序言）開篇，使用23幅木刻，連同重複使用共47幅插圖。⁠[11]

1558—1909年Hengwrt手稿的流傳

Hengwrt手稿曾屬於1558年去世的切斯特布商Fouke Dutton；16世紀70年代時，它與Banestar（Bannester）家族相關，1625年的一份備忘錄提到Llanfair-is-gaer的Andrew Brereton（1649年去世）。此後手稿進入Hengwrt的Robert Vaughan（約1592—1667年）的藏書，並一直留在Hengwrt，直至1859年隨藏書遺贈給Peniarth的W.W.E. Wynne。⁠[5]

1904年，Wynne之子將這批手稿售予Sir John Williams；1909年，Williams將包括Hengwrt手稿在內的Peniarth手稿捐贈給新成立的威爾士國家圖書館，手稿此後一直由該館收藏。⁠[5]

1917年Ellesmere手稿歸入Huntington藏書

1917年，Huntington通過Sotheby’s私下購入Bridgewater圖書館，原屬Bridgewater House圖書館的Ellesmere手稿由此歸入Huntington藏書。⁠[7][6]

1998年7月8日Caxton初版創拍賣紀錄

1998年7月8日，Christie, Manson & Woods在倫敦拍賣Wentworth圖書館舊藏的Caxton與Wynkyn de Worde等早期英格蘭印本，拍品屬於Olive, Countess Fitzwilliam’s Chattels settlement等家族信託；其中Caxton初版The Canterbury Tales（第2號拍品）由Sir Paul GettyJohn Paul Getty Jr.John Paul Getty Jr.（1932—2003），通稱Sir Paul Getty，是石油商人J. Paul Getty之子，長居英國的慈善家和藏書家，曾向National Gallery、British Film Institute及板球運動等大額捐贈，1986年獲授榮譽KBE。點擊查看完整詞條（J. Paul Getty Jr.）以4,621,500英鎊購得，由Maggs Bros代為競投。⁠[12][13]

這部以紅色皮革裝幀的初版估價僅為50萬至70萬英鎊，成交價創下印本書拍賣的最高紀錄；它也是最後一部仍在私人手中的初版。⁠[14][13]

1999年在Morgan圖書館展出

1999年1月27日至5月2日，紐約Morgan圖書館舉辦“The Wormsley Library: A Personal Selection by Sir Paul Getty, K.B.E.”展覽，展出Getty藏書中逾百件作品，其中包括一部罕見的Caxton版The Canterbury Tales。⁠[15]

2023年British Library與Merton學院將藏本數字化

2023年10月，British Library將其全部與Chaucer相關的中世紀手稿免費上線，共60餘件，包括The Canterbury Tales的多個手稿版本，以及四個不同的Caxton印本。⁠[16]

2023年12月8日，Merton學院宣佈其所藏Caxton初版已全部數字化；該本是保存最好的存本之一，帶有包括金色泥金裝飾在內的手繪裝飾，全書文字已被手工校正。⁠[17]

截至2026年6月：Wormsley圖書館藏本

Caxton and Beyond數據庫所列的初版存本中包括Wormsley Library藏本。Sir Paul Getty於1985年從Fane家族購入白金漢郡的Wormsley莊園，並修建了城堡式圖書館收藏其書籍與手稿；莊園現為Mark與Caterina Getty一家所有。⁠[9][18]

2020年和2026年對Wormsley圖書館的介紹均將Caxton初版The Canterbury Tales列為館藏重點；2026年6月，圖書館仍為小範圍訪客提供由館員帶領的參觀。⁠[19][20]
