Key facts
1926Marcel Bleustein Founds Publicis
In 1926, Marcel Bleustein, born in 1906, founded the advertising agency Publicis at 17 rue du Faubourg Montmartre in Paris with 50,000 francs, at the age of 20. The name combines the first part of the French word for advertising, publicité, with “cis,” echoing the number 6 from 1926. By 1927 the agency had a roster of clients made up mainly of friends, including Comptoir Cardinet, Meubles Lévitan and Brunswick Furs.[1][1][1][1][1]
1930–1935Radio Advertising and Radio Cité
In 1930, Marcel Bleustein introduced radio advertising. In 1934, advertising was abolished on French state radio, which accounted for half of the agency’s business; Bleustein responded by launching his own station, Radio Cité. In 1935, Publicis began acquiring cinemas and joined forces with its main competitor, Havas, to found the media sales house “Cinema and Advertising.”[1][1][1][1][1]
1940Forced to Close During the Second World War
In 1940, Radio Cité was taken over by the Nazis and Publicis, identified as a Jewish business, was forced to close. Bleustein joined the Resistance under the name “Blanchet,” and in 1943 he joined General de Gaulle in London; by 1945 he had lost nearly all his personal belongings and professional assets.[1][1][1][1]
January 1, 1946Rebuilt on the Champs-Élysées
On January 1, 1946, Bleustein gathered his former staff and re-established Publicis at 65 Champs-Élysées; the first activity to restart was the press advertising sales business Régie-Presse, and the workforce grew from 26 employees in 1946 to 207 in 1955. In 1954 he officially added his Resistance pseudonym to his name, becoming Marcel Bleustein-Blanchet.[1][1][1][1][1]

1968French Television Opens to Advertising
