Elmer then headed a court-reporting firm and was near retirement age; Perkin was a young investment banker who had studied chemical engineering at Pratt Institute for a year. The two met at an astronomy lecture Elmer gave in Brooklyn. Perkin raised $15,000 from relatives and Elmer contributed $5,000; the firm first worked from an office in Manhattan, then began producing optical components in Jersey City, New Jersey, and was incorporated on December 13, 1939.[1]
