Founded

After Rupert Murdoch bought the New York Post in 1976, the paper started the New York gossip column Page Six.[1]

Moves Back but Keeps Its Name

In the 1980s the column moved back two pages but kept the Page Six name. Richard Johnson became its editor in 1985, left for the New York Daily News in 1990 and returned to the Post in 1993.[1]

Launches pagesix.com

In February 2000 the New York Post launched pagesix.com, a website devoted to gossip and funded through advertising and sponsorships. Editor Richard Johnson said, “We've got the best gossip in New York.”[3]

The Jared Paul Stern Affair

In April 2006 billionaire Ron Burkle alleged that Page Six contributor Jared Paul Stern had sought $100,000 plus $10,000 a month for a year to stop unfavorable items. Post editor-in-chief Col Allan said that if the allegations proved true, the conduct would be morally and journalistically reprehensible.[4]

Post spokesman Howard Rubenstein said the paper had suspended Stern, taken his computer and was cooperating with the federal inquiry.[5]

No Charges Against Stern

Stern denied the accusations. In January 2007 his lawyer confirmed he would not be indicted and attributed the accusations to Burkle’s personal vendetta against the New York Post.[6]

Page Six Magazine Goes Weekly

A Page Six magazine had two trial runs in the first half of 2007.[7]

The weekly Page Six Magazine, inserted in the Sunday edition, was edited by Margi Conklin, formerly of Harper’s Bazaar and New Woman.[8]

Paula Froelich Departs

Paula Froelich, the column’s second in command for about a decade, left in 2009 after her first novel, Mercury in Retrograde, became a bestseller; she had previously been a financial reporter at Dow Jones.[9]

Richard Johnson Steps Down

In October 2010 Richard Johnson, who had led the column for 25 years, announced he was leaving for a digital venture of parent company News Corp in Los Angeles, and deputy editor Emily Smith succeeded him. Johnson said, “I love Page Six and The Post, but I've always wanted to give Los Angeles a try.”[10]
