June 1, 2021Leaves Cobo and Launches the Keystone Brand
On June 1, 2021, Lixin Liu announced that he was leaving Cobo to start a new hardware wallet brand, Keystone, operated by the original Cobo Vault team. He said Cobo had decided to deprioritize Cobo Vault to “minimum maintenance” with no new devices manufactured, citing the differing users of centralized and decentralized services, Cobo’s focus on Chinese users while Cobo Vault mainly served Western and other markets, and limited manpower that made focusing on custodial services logical.[2]
Keystone shared the same firmware platform as Cobo Vault and kept its features while adding hardware improvements, and Cobo Vault owners could obtain a 50% upgrade discount with proof of purchase. Keystone’s GitHub repository states that the Keystone hardware wallet was relaunched from the Cobo Vault branding.[2][3]
October 20, 2026Unauthorized Access to Official Website
On October 20, 2026, Keystone detected unauthorized access to its official website; after verifying API activity with Shopify, it confirmed on October 23 that a third party had obtained customer shipping information, and it apologized publicly on X on October 24. The exposed data included customer names, contact details, shipping addresses and order details such as items purchased and prices; the company said payment card and bank details, recovery phrases, private keys and wallet passwords were not compromised. It did not disclose how many customers were affected.[4][5]
Keystone said it had blocked the unauthorized access and patched the vulnerability, begun notifying affected customers and opened an investigation, and would publish a detailed report in the coming days; it urged users to avoid unexpected links, never share recovery phrases or private keys, never enter a recovery phrase into a device they did not order, and beware of people posing as Keystone staff offering refunds, replacement devices or help with orders or shipping addresses.[4][5]
As of October 2026: Products and Security Design
As of October 2026, Keystone’s main product was the Keystone 3 Pro hardware wallet (also offered in co-branded and customized versions), alongside the ForgeBox developer hardware, the Keystone Tablet series for seed phrase storage, accessories and the Keystone Nexus software. Its website describes it as a “100% open source” air-gapped cold wallet and says it moved from closed-source to open-source software and hardware.[6]
Keystone 3 firmware is written in Rust and C and runs on FreeRTOS on an MH1903 microcontroller, with three secure element chips (Microchip DS28C50, Maxim MAX32520 and Microchip ATECC608A), and can be built as a bitcoin-only edition; in air-gapped mode the device exchanges data via QR codes and microSD cards, keeping private keys offline, and offers fingerprint verification and tamper-triggered self-destruct. The earlier Keystone cold application derived from the Cobo Vault platform ran on customized hardware with Android 8.1 (Go Edition) and is open source under GPL-3.0.[7][6][3]
Keystone CTO Aaron Chen contributed to the development of BIP-129, a Bitcoin multisig wallet setup standard. The website says Keystone supports more than 45 wallets and coins and has strategic partnerships with MetaMask, OKXOKXOKX is a global digital-asset trading platform that began operating in 2017 under the name OKEx.
