Key facts

Founded as an ICL–QUBIS Joint Venture

Queen’s University Belfast and ICL (later Fujitsu) raised £50,000 to set up the company.[3]

Frank Graham Becomes Managing Director

Frank Graham became managing director of Kainos in early 1987, having previously been marketing director at Software Ireland in Belfast. He was initially the company’s only employee; staff numbers reached about 14 in the first year and roughly doubled the next. QUBIS helped set up the company, an arrangement that matched Queen’s University Belfast graduates with ICL’s shortage of software delivery capacity.[4]

Brendan Mooney Joins and Becomes Managing Director

Brendan Mooney joined Kainos as a software engineer in 1989, later moved to Dublin to establish the company’s Irish operation, returned to Belfast in 2000 and became managing director in 2001.[5]

He took charge during the dotcom collapse, when Fujitsu, the largest shareholder, accounted for more than 90% of the company’s business and that market then collapsed. With the support of the board and staff, the company rebuilt its customer base first in Ireland and then in the UK.[3]

ACT Investment and the Meridio Spin-Out

In the mid-1990s Kainos began developing its own product, Kainos Knowledge; by 2001 it had about 250 staff and was producing software for a number of large organisations.[4]

In March 2000 ACT Venture Capital bought a 31% stake in Kainos Software from ICL for an undisclosed price, leaving QUBIS as the largest shareholder with 49% and ICL with 20%. The company then specialised in custom-built customer relationship management and e-commerce systems and had more than 200 employees at its Belfast headquarters and offices in Dublin and London.[6]

The products business was spun out as Meridio in June 2001 with the involvement of ACT Venture Capital, and Frank Graham became Meridio’s managing director. In October 2007 Meridio was sold to Autonomy Corporation; ACT expected to realise more than $25 million, about $20 million up front and about $5 million through a 12-month earn-out.[7][4]

Sale of SpeechStorm

Kainos had wholly owned SpeechStorm, a speech recognition company serving contact centres, until a 2010 management buyout led by SpeechStorm chief executive Oliver Lennon and backed by Crescent Capital, in which Kainos sold a majority stake and after which it had no operational role. In December 2015 Genesys acquired SpeechStorm and Kainos sold its remaining stake for £2 million in cash, with a further small sum held in escrow; SpeechStorm had revenue of £2.3 million in the year to March 2015.[8]

Workday Partnership
