Acquiring BitTorrent

In June 2018 the file-sharing company BitTorrent was sold for $140 million in cash to Sun and his blockchain startup Tron; the price comprised a cash payment from Sun and cash in the company distributed to shareholders. At the time some shareholders were still disputing the terms.[2]

Grenada’s Ambassador to the WTO

In December 2021 the government of Grenada appointed Sun as its ambassador and permanent representative to the World Trade Organization; in June 2022 he led Grenada’s delegation to the WTO’s 12th Ministerial Conference.[6][3]

About seven months later, the New National Party that had appointed him lost the general election, and the incoming National Democratic Congress government recalled all ambassadors. SEC Lawsuit

On March 22, 2023, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sued Sun and three wholly owned companies, Tron Foundation Limited, BitTorrent Foundation Ltd. and Rainberry Inc., in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (No. 23-cv-2433), alleging unregistered offers and sales of the TRX and BTT tokens in violation of Section 5 of the Securities Act of 1933.[7]

The SEC further alleged that from April 2018 to February 2019 Sun directed employees to carry out more than 600,000 wash trades of TRX between two accounts he controlled, with 4.5 million to 7.4 million TRX wash traded daily, and that he generated $31 million from unregistered token sales; it also charged Sun and the companies with aiding and abetting eight celebrities’ unlawful touting. These were the SEC’s allegations when it filed suit.[7]

Buying “Comedian”

In November 2024 Sun paid $6.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction for “Comedian,” the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan’s banana duct-taped to a wall, bidding online and paying in crypto. What he received was a roll of duct tape, installation instructions and a certificate of authenticity; the banana itself was not included.[8]

He said: “This is not just an artwork,” calling the piece one that “represents a cultural phenomenon,” and said he planned to eat the banana as part of the artistic experience.[8]

Joint Motion to Stay the SEC Case

On February 26, 2025, the SEC and Sun and the other defendants jointly asked the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York to stay the case to “explore a potential resolution”; the parties said a resolution would spare the court from ruling on the defendants’ pending motion to dismiss.[10]

Suing World Liberty Financial

In April 2026 Sun sued World Liberty Financial in a California federal court, accusing it of freezing his tokens and threatening to burn them. He said on social media: “I have tried in good faith to resolve this situation with the World Liberty project team without resorting to litigation,” adding that they had left him no choice but to turn to the courts.[11]

Earlier, when Sun threatened to sue, the WLFI side called his claims “baseless allegations.”[11]
