Joseph Lubin
Joseph Lubin is a co-founder of Ethereum, the founder of Consensys, and the chairman of SharpLink. After the separation plan announced in September 2026, he serves as chairman and chief executive officer of MetaMask and as executive chairman of the new Consensys. With a background in software, robotics, cryptographic payments, and financial technology, he provided early funding and organizational support to EthereumEthereumEthereum is an open, general-purpose smart contract blockchain that launched in 2015, and its native asset is ether (ETH). Key facts
From the Bitcoin White Paper to Ethereum’s Founding Team
Lubin says that after reading the Bitcoin white paper in 2011 he realized decentralized consensus could support new mechanisms for economic, social, and political coordination. After reading Buterin’s Ethereum white paper, he concluded that general-purpose smart contracts turned that potential into a programmable platform, and so in early 2014 he joined the team, becoming one of its eight co-founders.[1]
He was older than the other founders, brought software, finance, and organizational experience, and took on strategy and operations in the early period. There are no consistent, auditable public records of the precise amount he contributed in personal ETH or cash.[1]
2014Becoming a Co-Founder of Ethereum
Ethereum’s official history lists Lubin among its eight co-founders and notes that he provided funding for the project’s earliest stage. His contribution differed from that of the founders who developed clients or wrote the white paper, focusing more on funding, organization, and turning the protocol into usable ecosystem infrastructure.[2]
Founding Consensys
Lubin founded Consensys in 2014 and served as its chief executive officer for many years. The company builds software, developer tools, and enterprise solutions around Ethereum, including MetaMask and Infura. Consensys is a major company in the Ethereum ecosystem, but the Ethereum network itself is not owned or solely controlled by the company.[1]
Consensys: From Venture Studio to Core Software Company
Lubin created ConsenSys around 2014, initially using a distributed “mesh” and spoke model to incubate Ethereum applications, developer tools, and enterprise solutions, and the team expanded rapidly after 2015. As its products matured, Consensys Software focused on MetaMask, Infura, protocol clients, Linea, staking, and enterprise infrastructure, while other early projects stayed in or were spun out into Consensys Mesh.[3]
Different company accounts give two common founding years for Consensys, 2014 and 2015: the company’s current homepage says “Founded in 2014,” while its profile page emphasizes ecosystem building “Since 2015.”[3]
2014Legal, Presale, and Global Organizing Work for Ethereum
Ethereum’s official 2014 team page listed Lubin under software engineering and as a quantitative analyst. He went on to write project updates recording that the team was simultaneously advancing multiple clients, global meetups, the legal structure, a Swiss entity, presale terms, and brand building; by June of that year, official figures counted 58 related meetups in 49 cities across 19 countries.[4]
These contemporaneous materials show that his contribution was not limited to code but also included organizing a not-yet-launched protocol into a project that could be funded and released. The meetup and subscription figures come from the team’s internal statistics at the time and cannot be treated as independently audited user numbers; the final foundation structure and presale were completed jointly by multiple founders, lawyers, and the community.[4]
2018ConsenSys 2.0 and a 13% Reduction
After the crypto market weakened in 2018, ConsenSys announced its “2.0” restructuring: tightening financial and performance requirements for spokes, focusing on products that could become sustainable businesses, and cutting about 13% of mesh members across departments including Solutions, spokes, and hub services. The company described this as a shift from an experimental venture studio to stricter operating discipline.[5]
The cuts revealed the costs and commercialization pressures of Lubin’s early broad incubation model and also affected multiple teams and projects. The source is the company’s own announcement.[5]
2021–2022Funding Rounds and Valuations
In November 2021, ConsenSys completed a $200 million funding round at a valuation of $3.2 billion; new investors included Marshall Wace, Third Point, ParaFi, and Think Investments, and earlier that year it had also raised $65 million. In March 2022, the company raised another $450 million at a valuation of more than $7 billion, with investors including ParaFi, Temasek, SoftBankSoftBank GroupSoftBank Group (SoftBank Group Corp.) is an investment holding company headquartered in Tokyo, founded by Masayoshi Son in 1981. Starting out as a distributor of personal computer software, it moved into the internet, broadband and mobile communications, and has since become an investment group centered on AI-related assets such as Arm, the SoftBank Vision Funds and OpenAI.Open the full entry Vision Fund 2, and Microsoft.[6]
These figures are company valuations at specific funding rounds, not Lubin’s immediately realizable personal net worth, and cannot be extrapolated to the company’s current value. The use of funds, equity dilution, and specific shareholdings have not been fully disclosed.[6]
2024SEC Lawsuit over MetaMask Swaps and Staking
In June 2024, the SEC sued Consensys Software, alleging that it engaged in unregistered broker activity through MetaMask Swaps and Staking, and contending that its services for liquid staking products such as Lido and Rocket Pool involved unregistered securities offerings. The regulator said the company provided functions such as quotes, routing, execution, and transaction compensation, and organized related asset transactions through its staking service.[7]
These are the SEC’s allegations in a civil complaint directed at the company and specific services; they are not criminal fraud charges against Lubin personally, nor a court finding of illegality. MetaMask’s ordinary self-custody functions should also be distinguished from Swaps and Staking.[7]
2025SEC and Consensys Jointly Dismiss the Case
On March 27, 2025, the SEC’s official litigation list recorded a joint stipulation of dismissal in SEC v. Consensys Software, ending the enforcement action with prejudice, which means the same claims cannot be refiled in that case. The company had earlier announced that the two sides had agreed in principle to end the case concerning MetaMask.[8]
The dismissal removed the risk of the case proceeding, but it did not produce, through an evidentiary trial, a general merits judgment on wallets, staking, LSTs, or ETH in all settings. Nor does it automatically prove that every one of the company’s past businesses was lawful.[8]
2025–2026Chairman of SharpLink
In May 2025, Lubin was appointed a director of the U.S.-listed company SharpLink and became its chairman. The company then adopted an ETH-centered treasury strategy, and Lubin also joined its Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee and its Investment and Technology Committee; the 2026 proxy statement continued to list him as chairman and also disclosed his role as founder and CEO of Consensys.[9]
The chairmanship carries corporate governance and strategic responsibilities; it does not mean he personally owns all of SharpLink’s ETH or controls the Ethereum network.[9]
September 9, 2026Changes to Consensys and MetaMask Leadership Roles
On September 9, 2026, Consensys Software Inc. announced its separation into two independently operating companies. The existing entity was renamed MetaMask, with Lubin as chairman and chief executive officer; the protocol and institutional infrastructure business was placed in a new company that keeps the Consensys name, with Mike Kriak as chief executive officer, David Cunningham as president, and Lubin as executive chairman. The two companies began operating independently that day, and the full separation is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.[10]
September 9, 2026Setting Out MetaMask’s Consumer Finance Direction
On the same day, Lubin published an article as chairman and chief executive officer of MetaMask, naming self-custodial consumer finance as the company’s direction. MetaMask focuses on asset management, payments, and financial services for individual users, while the new Consensys takes on the protocol and institutional infrastructure business; existing wallets, assets, and keys do not need to be migrated because of the corporate changes.[11]
Education and Engineering and Finance Experience
Consensys’ official biography says Lubin studied electrical engineering and computer science at Princeton UniversityPrinceton UniversityPrinceton University is a private university and Ivy League member in Princeton, New Jersey. Chartered on October 22, 1746 as the College of New Jersey, it moved to Princeton in 1756 and adopted its present name in 1896. Undergraduate education leads to A.B. and B.S.E. degrees and emphasizes small-group discussion, independent research and residential college life. Graduate education spans the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering. As of October 2026, Christopher L. Eisgruber was president. Princeton: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and the Robotics Lab
Joseph Lubin grew up in Toronto and went on to attend Princeton University, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. While there, he worked on autonomous music generation tools at the Princeton Robotics Lab and built autonomous mobile robots at the private research firm Vision Applications; this work combined software, control systems, and artificial intelligence problems with engineering implementation.[1]
His education and early lab experience come mainly from Consensys’ official profile page, which can confirm his career path, but the page is material from his own company.[1]
Consulting, Cryptographic Payments, a Hedge Fund, and Goldman Sachs
After university, Lubin worked at the intersection of software engineering and finance. At eMagine he worked on the Identrus cryptographic payment and trade finance network, at Blacksmith Software Consulting he ran the New York office, and he also took part in founding and operating a hedge fund; he later served as vice president of technology in the private wealth management division of Goldman Sachs.[1]
These positions exposed him to cryptography, identity, clearing, trading systems, and asset management, but no public materials establish the scale of assets he personally managed or his specific trading performance.[1]
MetaMask, Infura, Linea, and Credit for Team Achievements
Before the 2026 separation, Consensys’ core products included the self-custodial wallet and dapp gateway MetaMask, the developer RPC and API platform Infura, contributions to Ethereum execution/consensus clients, institutional staking services, and the zero-knowledge layer-two network Linea. They let users manage keys, applications read on-chain state, and developers submit transactions, and they take part in Ethereum’s scaling and infrastructure maintenance.[3]
As founder and CEO, Lubin provided capital, organization, and strategic direction, but the products were developed by their respective teams, and acquisitions, open-source communities, and outside contributions were also important. Assets held or invested in by Consensys do not automatically belong to Lubin personally.[3]
The Consensys Mesh Portfolio and the Limits of Personal Investment
Many of the spokes that ConsenSys incubated early on later formed Consensys Mesh, which connects a group of Web3 projects through investment, incubation, and operational support; Lubin is currently listed as Mesh’s founder and chairman, and before the 2026 separation he was also chief executive officer of Consensys Software. Mesh’s public portfolio includes software, infrastructure, media, and application companies.[12]
The portfolio page describes institutional investment and incubation relationships and does not prove that Lubin holds equity in each company through a personal account. He may benefit indirectly through founder interests, but legal holders, fund structures, and personal investments require separate disclosure.[12]
Current Public Roles and Governance Limits
Current Consensys materials also list him as chairman of SharpLink. Such corporate roles should be understood separately from his status as a co-founder of Ethereum: the former are organizational management roles, while the latter is a historical founding relationship with an open network.[1]
