Key facts

Hackathon Project

Greptile began at a hackathon in San Francisco’s SoMa district in July 2023 with the idea of letting developers ask plain-English questions about large real-world codebases. Co-founders Soohoon Choi, Vaishant Kameswaran and Daksh Gupta got their first paying customers within a week of the event and had 100 users before joining Y Combinator.[1][2]

Gupta founded Greptile after graduating from Georgia Tech in 2023; Kameswaran also studied computer science at Georgia Tech.[3][4]

Y Combinator and Seed Round

Its early product, which it called “codebase-optimized RAG,” indexed a codebase as a graph of how its parts connect rather than as a list of files, and was offered as a chatbot and an API for uses such as reviewing merge requests, diagnosing bugs from Sentry alerts and updating internal documentation.[2]

Greptile 2.0

On October 8, 2024, Greptile released Greptile 2.0, a ground-up rewrite positioning the product as a codebase intelligence platform, with uses including a code review bot, Jira and Linear integrations and custom integrations. The company said it served more than 900 software teams in over 50 countries.[1]

Post on Working Hours

In November 2024 Gupta, then 22, posted on X that Greptile “offers no work-life-balance,” writing that employees typically worked from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., including Saturdays and sometimes Sundays. After the post went viral he said in an interview with Inc.: “No one cares about the third-best company, or even the second-best company in any category in software.”[3]

September–November 2025: Series A and Greptile v3

On September 23, 2025, Greptile announced a $25 million Series A led by Benchmark, with continued support from Cory Levy, Y Combinator and Initialized Capital; the company is legally named Tabnam Inc. It said it had reviewed more than 500 million lines of code that month for companies including Brex, Substack, PostHogPostHogPostHog is a software company and product platform founded in 2020 by James Hawkins and Tim Glaser. It began with open-source product analytics and expanded into session replay, feature flags, experimentation, a data warehouse and AI-assisted development. It offers cloud services and open-source code, with some enterprise features under separate licensing; PostHog Desktop entered public beta in 2026.Open the full entry, Bilt and Y Combinator’s internal software team.[5][6]

Greptile v3, released the same day, rewrote the review workflow: where v2 ran a fixed flowchart of codebase-context and external-context steps, v3 lets the agent decide its next step based on what it finds. v3 also learns coding standards from engineers’ comments and added the Greptile MCP Server and integrations with Jira, Notion and other tools. The company said v3 reviewed more than one billion lines of code after launch and that its upvote/downvote ratio rose from 1.44 under v2 to 5.13.[7][5]

March–September 2026: v4, TREX, v5 and Review Tiers

On March 5, 2026, Greptile released Greptile Agent v4 and moved to base-plus-usage pricing of $30 per developer per month, including 50 reviews, with additional reviews at $1 each.[8]

On June 15, 2026, Greptile launched TREX (short for Test, Run, Execute), an execution layer that runs the code under review rather than only reading it; the company said Greptile review with TREX caught 20% more bugs in its evaluations.[9]

On August 5, 2026, Greptile released v5, which runs a swarm of agents in parallel, each exploring a single hypothesis for a potential bug; the company said live data from more than one million pull requests showed the share of Greptile comments addressed by authors rising from 52% to 66%. On September 25, 2026, it introduced two deeper review tiers, Plus and Apex, costing 3 and 10 credits per review against 1 credit for the base tier.[10][11]
