Earns a Harvard PhD in Mathematics

Postdoctoral Work at MIT and the Hebrew University

After his PhD he spent time at MIT and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem before leaving academia; at the Hebrew University in the 1990s he met the mathematician Marcus du Sautoy.[2]

Presents a Gauge-Theory Approach to Economics With Pia Malaney

Presents Geometric Unity at Oxford

In May 2013, while working as an economist and consultant at the New York hedge fund Natron Group, he lectured at Oxford’s Clarendon Laboratory at du Sautoy’s invitation on his unification theory, “Geometric Unity,” which proposes a 14-dimensional “observerse” containing four-dimensional space-time.[2]

The talk, billed as a Special Simonyi Lecture, drew criticism: the astrophysicist Andrew Pontzen objected to hosting it in a physics department without inviting physicists, Subir Sarkar expressed surprise at the omission, and others noted there was not yet a technical paper to evaluate.[4]

The physicist Peter Woit said at the time that he was still in the dark about the details and that Weinstein needed to release specifics such as a paper or slides, while noting in comments that Weinstein had worked quietly on the ideas for years.[5]

His Term “Intellectual Dark Web” Gains Attention

In 2018 the term “Intellectual Dark Web,” coined by him while managing director of Thiel Capital, came into use for a loose group of public intellectuals from left and right. His younger brother, the biologist Bret Weinstein, said Eric used it to describe an intellectually unpoliced space outside what he calls the “gated institutional narrative.”[6]

First Appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast

On March 20, 2019, he first appeared on Lex FridmanLex FridmanLex Fridman is a Soviet-born, US-raised computer scientist and podcast host who works as an MIT research scientist on human-AI interaction and autonomous driving. His Lex Fridman Podcast is known for hours-long conversations with guests including heads of state and technology leaders.Open the full entry’s podcast in an unnumbered episode, which introduced him as a mathematician, economist, physicist and managing director of Thiel Capital and focused on revolutionary ideas in science, mathematics and society.[7]

Hosts The Portal Podcast

From 2019 he hosted The Portal, an interview podcast distributed by Kast Media and described as “an exploration into discovery” through conversations with thought leaders; it ran 44 episodes in 2019–2020, the last released on December 2, 2020.[8]

Second Appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast

On April 13, 2020, he appeared on episode 88 of the Lex Fridman Podcast; the episode page notes that he had recently released his 2013 Oxford lecture on Geometric Unity through The Portal, and the conversation also covered the coronavirus pandemic, new leaders and The Portal.[9]

Third Appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast

On October 29, 2020, he appeared on episode 134, titled on good and evil and genius and madness, which also touched on Joe Rogan, Roger Penrose, Jeffrey Epstein and an update on Geometric Unity.[10]

Timothy Nguyen Publishes a Response to Geometric Unity

In February 2021 Timothy Nguyen, a researcher at GoogleGoogleGoogle is an American technology company founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin and incorporated in 1998. It became an Alphabet subsidiary in 2015. Its businesses include internet search, advertising, software platforms, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.Open the full entry AI, co-authored a paper evaluating Geometric Unity that identified mathematical and physical gaps and said the theory relied on a poorly defined “Shiab” operator of Weinstein’s own invention.[11]

Fourth Appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast

On February 23, 2021, he appeared on episode 163, centered on difficult conversations, free speech and physics, with topics including the Intellectual Dark Web, cryptocurrency and the Geometric Unity paper.[12]

Releases a Working Draft of Geometric Unity

On April 1, 2021, he self-published Geometric Unity: Author’s Working Draft, v 1.0. Its footnote says the author “is not a physicist and is no longer an active academician, but is an Entertainer and host of The Portal podcast,” and calls the document a “work of entertainment.”[13]

He then discussed it on Joe Rogan’s podcast. Nguyen said the paper addressed none of the technical gaps they had raised, and the cosmologist Richard Easther said the theory had had no visible impact.[11]

Managing Director at Thiel Capital

Presents “Economics as Gauge Theory” at the University of Chicago

On November 10, 2021, the Malaney–Weinstein paper “Economics as Gauge Theory” was presented at a University of Chicago Money and Banking Workshop. That December Nguyen posted a response arguing that its conjectures added no clear value for calculating index numbers or inflation rates.[15]
