Key facts

Founding

NASA’s contemporary announcement dates the founding to September 20, 2008. Peter H. Diamandis and Ray Kurzweil initiated the organization. Its retrospective account traces the idea to Diamandis reading Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Near and proposing a place where leaders could study accelerating technologies and their applications.[3][4]

A Home at NASA Research Park

NASA Ames announced space for Singularity University at NASA Research Park under an Enhanced Use Lease Agreement. Plans included a nine-week summer program, a three-day CEO course and a ten-day management course spanning computing, biotechnology, robotics, energy, space and policy. NASA clarified that its personnel had contributed ideas but would not operate or manage the institution.[3]

The First Summer Session

An on-site Singularity Hub report records the first summer session at NASA Ames with about 40 participants. Ray Kurzweil held a question-and-answer session lasting more than an hour. The report identifies International Space University as an organizational model and describes interdisciplinary discussion and team interaction.[5]

Conversion to a Benefit Corporation

In a later official interview, then-CEO Rob Nail recalled that the organization began as a nonprofit and converted to a benefit corporation in 2012. He described the change as a way to combine a social mission with a financially sustainable business.[6]

The First SU Labs Accelerator

SU Labs welcomed seven startups to a ten-week accelerator led by Pascal Finette and colleagues. Projects covered Totus Power’s battery reuse, Be My Eyes’ remote visual assistance, FREDSense’s water testing, Eat Limmo’s food byproducts, X2AI’s mental-health technology, HyperCube’s pollution monitoring and Radiomaze’s home security. These were the development areas presented by the accelerator at the time.[7]

Networks and Impact Reporting

An official Rob Nail interview emphasized connections among corporations, startups, nonprofits and government participants. Nail said a community survey had collected 4,644 impact initiatives. This was a count of reported projects, rather than an independently verified measure of successful outcomes or people helped.[6]

A $32 Million Series B

The organization announced a $32 million Series B co-led by WestRiver Group and Boeing, with participation from Silicon Valley Bank, TAL Education Group, Mukita and PeopleFund. Funding supported global programs, digital courses, membership and entrepreneurship services. Erik Anderson became chairman; Diamandis became Executive Founder and remained a director. Boeing’s Bethany Tate Cornell joined the board.[8]

A Response on Funding and Staffing

Rob Nail issued a statement responding to Bloomberg Businessweek. He acknowledged reduced Google funding for GSP but attributed it to redevelopment of the program and said Google supported another startup initiative. He also acknowledged a reduction involving 14 former staff members while disputing that Google’s funding decision caused it. These were the organization’s stated explanations.[9]

Acquisition of Futurism

Singularity University announced the acquisition of Futurism, including its website, creative operation and studio business, to expand technology media and future-oriented storytelling. Futurism retained its brand while its team joined the organization. The announcement explicitly excluded Gravity Products and the Gravity Blanket.[10]

A360 and a COVID-19 Outbreak

A360 was part of Singularity University. Diamandis later described a studio event at XPRIZE’s Culver City offices combining remote participation and an in-person audience. In his February 12 account, he reported 24 positive cases, including himself, despite repeated testing. He apologized for misplaced confidence in testing and not requiring masks throughout, and announced a $100,000 donation to Frontline Families Fund.[11][12]

The Singularity Group Structure

The organization announced a new corporate structure called Singularity Group, with Singularity University as one component. The announcement listed year-round membership learning, leadership programs, Singularity Labs, a startup portfolio and media businesses, and identified Steve Leonard as CEO. Its ambition to affect a billion people within five years was a target, not a reported achievement.[13]

Sale of Futurism

Recurrent Ventures announced its acquisition of Futurism from Singularity University, placing it within a science, technology and outdoor publishing division alongside brands such as Popular Science. The announcement said the website, newsletter and social channels would continue. Financial terms were not disclosed.[14]

Aaron Vaccaro Becomes President

The current official biography dates Aaron Vaccaro’s presidency from 2023 and describes him as leading the management team. He previously served as vice president at WestRiver Group and remains an operating partner there.[15]

A Global Impact Challenge with Sync

Singularity and digital-wellbeing initiative Sync sought solutions to misinformation, cyberbullying and social disconnection. They planned a November 7 winner announcement, $250,000 in staged funding and an Executive Program scholarship. The organizers also reported 119 Global Impact Challenges in more than 50 countries since 2010. The announcement establishes the competition plan, rather than a subsequent award payment.[16]

The Listed Operator

The website terms updated on this date identify Singularity Education Group as a California benefit corporation doing business as Singularity University. The operating company’s legal name therefore differs from the educational brand.[17]

Leadership and Programs

The official team page checked in October 2026 lists Erik Anderson as chairman and CEO, Aaron Vaccaro as president and Naveen Jain as vice chairman. Diamandis is Executive Founder; Kurzweil is cofounder and chancellor. The website presents individual and custom corporate programs examining technology’s implications for individuals, organizations and society.[15][18]

A Scheduled Executive Program

As of October 11, 2026, the website schedules this five-day Executive Program at the Ameswell Hotel in Mountain View, with another cohort listed for May 2–6, 2027. Lectures, workshops and visits cover why change occurs, emerging technologies and applications. The advertised price is $15,900 excluding travel and lodging, with a waitlist-only notice. These are announced arrangements.[19]
