Sherry Lansing

Sherry Lansing is an American film executive, producer and philanthropist who led 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures. She is founder and CEO of her namesake foundation and board chair of Universal Music Group.

Sherry Lansing was born in Chicago, Illinois, in the United States.⁠[1]

Lansing earned a BS in speech from Northwestern University, graduating cum laude.⁠[2]

After 1966: Teaching, Acting and Script Work

She moved to Los Angeles, taught high school English and mathematics, and pursued acting. She later became a script reader at MGM, moved into studio management and served as a vice president at Columbia Pictures.⁠[3]

Leading 20th Century Fox

Lansing was appointed president of 20th Century Fox, becoming the first woman to lead a major Hollywood studio.⁠[4]

Independent Producing

She worked as an independent producer, collaborating with Stanley Jaffe on Fatal Attraction. She later recalled that studios repeatedly rejected the project before it secured a production opportunity.⁠[5]

Leading Paramount Pictures

Lansing became chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, serving until 2005. Films released during her leadership included Forrest Gump, Braveheart and Titanic.⁠[4]

Receiving a Hollywood Walk of Fame Star
