Key facts
1957Founded as Photo Researchers
The company was founded in New York in 1957 under the name Photo Researchers and soon established itself in scientific, medical, and nature photography, building its image library in collaboration with institutions such as MIT, Harvard University, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.[1][1][1][1]
March 2013Renamed Science Source
In March 2013, after 56 years in business, Photo Researchers Inc. rebranded as Science Source, with ownership and management unchanged and its website moved to www.sciencesource.com; it then had nearly 500,000 images online. Co-owner and creative director Bug Sutton said that most of the company’s sales came from science and medical images and that the new name better reflected its primary focus on science, medicine, natural history, space, and technology; president and co-owner Bob Zentmaier said the company wanted to be the first agency buyers think of when they need science, medical, or nature images.[2][2][2][2][2][2]
At the time of the rebranding, Science Source’s collection included more than 250,000 images from its roster of photographers and illustrators, as well as content from international partners such as Science Photo Library, Biosphoto, Phanie, BSIP, 3D4Medical, and Photoshot; the company also had a staff of digital artists who could produce custom photography and 2D and 3D illustration and modeling to client specifications, and it was growing its video and animation collections.[2][2][2]
Collections and Clients
Science Source’s collection comprises more than a million images, illustrations, videos, and animations, covering fields from biology and physics to medicine and earth sciences; its main clients are publishers, universities, museums, and companies in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors. The company also offers photographers and illustrators a platform for promoting their work.[1][1][1]
