Robert Duggan

Robert W. Duggan, also known as Bob Duggan, is an American entrepreneur and investor, and co-chief executive and chairman of Summit Therapeutics. He previously led Pharmacyclics and surgical-robotics company Computer Motion.

Robert W. Duggan, also known as Bob Duggan, attended St. Francis High School in Mountain View, California, and studied at UC Santa Barbara and UCLA. Forbes lists him as a dropout from both universities. His investment-firm biography describes three years of training under investor Herbert C. Kay.⁠[1][2]

Investing in Sunset Designs

His investment firm dates his acquisition of a half-interest and board seat in embroidery-kit business Sunset Designs to 1975. He participated in marketing, packaging and instruction improvements for its Jiffy Stitchery products.⁠[3]

Paradise Bakery and Food Businesses

He participated in financing, assembling the team and developing products for Paradise Bakery. His firm’s project history dates fresh-baked cookies and muffins in Long Beach to 1976 and a sale to Chart House to 1987. A quotation on the same page instead gives 1969, leaving an internal inconsistency in the early chronology.⁠[4]

Computer-networking Investments

He helped develop Communication Machinery Company. His firm describes its work in Ethernet node processors and data-entry systems, followed by its acquisition by Rockwell International.⁠[5]

Involvement in Government Technology Supply

His firm dates his involvement in Government Technology Services to 1986. The business supplied computer hardware, software and networking products to government customers. The company itself was founded in 1983, before his stated involvement.⁠[6]

Supporting UC Santa Barbara

His firm’s biography dates his UCSB Foundation trusteeship to 1989 and describes support for endowed science positions, Tibetan Buddhist studies and athletics.⁠[1]

Chairing Computer Motion

He chaired surgical-robotics company Computer Motion and also served as its chief executive from 1997 to 2003.⁠[7]

Metropolis Media

In the middle of the decade, he founded and chaired Metropolis Media, developing outdoor-advertising networks in markets including Croatia and Slovenia.⁠[8]

His firm’s biography records his appointment as a Knight of the French Legion of Honour.⁠[7]

Surgical-robotics Merger

Intuitive Surgical and Computer Motion completed their merger. Duggan subsequently served on Intuitive Surgical’s board until 2011.⁠[9][7]

Investing in Pharmacyclics

According to Forbes, he began investing in Pharmacyclics in 2004. The profile also describes the death of his son from brain cancer as background to his interest in cancer treatment.⁠[2]

Leading Pharmacyclics

He served as Pharmacyclics’ chairman, chief executive and largest investor, overseeing cancer-drug development and commercial partnerships.⁠[10]

Janssen Drug-development Agreement

Pharmacyclics entered an ibrutinib collaboration and licensing agreement with Janssen, providing $150 million upfront and up to $825 million in potential milestone payments. The latter depended on contractual conditions and were not all received at signing.⁠[12]

First US Approval of Imbruvica

The FDA granted accelerated approval to Imbruvica (ibrutinib) for previously treated mantle cell lymphoma, and Pharmacyclics launched it commercially in the United States that day. This was a product milestone during his tenure as chief executive.⁠[13]

AbbVie Completes Acquisition

AbbVie completed its acquisition of Pharmacyclics, which became a wholly owned subsidiary. The company-level consideration was distinct from Duggan’s personal proceeds.⁠[14]

Duggan Investments

He founded and led Duggan Investments, investing in private ventures and public equities, particularly disease treatments and medical technology.⁠[1]

UCSB announced that he had received the Venky Narayanamurti Entrepreneurial Leadership Award for his technology-entrepreneurship career. He was its seventeenth recipient.⁠[15]

Investing in and Chairing Pulse Biosciences

In February, Pulse disclosed combined ownership of approximately 17.1% by Duggan and Maky Zanganeh. He became chairman in November; its current board page lists him as co-chairman.⁠[16][7]

Discussing Religious Donations

In a Tampa Bay Times telephone interview, he affirmed that he remained a Scientologist and said donations exceeded the $360 million publicly discussed in 2016, without providing a new total. He credited teachings of founder L. Ron Hubbard with contributing to his business achievements.⁠[17]

Joining Summit’s Leadership

He joined Summit’s board in December 2019, became executive chairman in February 2020 and chief executive in April.⁠[10]

Co-chief Executive Leadership

Maky Zanganeh was appointed co-chief executive, sharing Summit’s leadership with Duggan.⁠[18]

Licensing Ivonescimab

Summit signed an agreement with Akeso on December 5, 2022, and closed it on January 17, 2023, obtaining ivonescimab development and commercialization rights in the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan. Terms included $500 million upfront and up to $4.5 billion in potential regulatory and commercial milestones.⁠[19]

HARMONi Clinical Results

Summit reported significant progression-free survival improvement in HARMONi’s primary analysis, but no statistically significant overall-survival benefit. It maintained that the benefit-risk profile supported submission; favorable later trends did not replace the original primary-analysis result.⁠[20]

FDA Accepts Application for Review

The FDA accepted the ivonescimab-plus-chemotherapy application, setting November 14, 2026 as the target action date. The filing says the FDA required significant overall-survival benefit in this setting and cautioned that progression-free survival results might be insufficient. Acceptance was not approval.⁠[20]

Derivative Lawsuit Dismissal

Rainaldi Revocable Trust filed a derivative suit in March 2025 over the 2022 related-party notes, alleging fiduciary breaches and unjust enrichment. On May 27, 2026, the court approved the parties’ voluntary dismissal with prejudice to that plaintiff but without prejudice to other shareholders. This was not a merits judgment on the allegations.⁠[21]

Agreement to Sell Antibiotic Program

Summit announced an agreement to sell ridinilazole to Biossil for $500,000 upfront, up to $104.5 million in potential milestones and sales royalties. Its earlier Phase III trial had missed the primary superiority endpoint. Duggan said the arrangement would allow continued focus on oncology.⁠[22]

School of Hard Knocks Interview

The program released an approximately 56-minute interview covering food, robotics and biotechnology investments, including how his son’s death from cancer influenced his career. Its headline about making $2 billion in one day does not establish audited personal cash income.⁠[23]

Combination-trial Collaboration

Summit announced collaboration with AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo on a planned Phase III trial of ivonescimab plus Datroway in first-line triple-negative breast cancer. The announcement continued to describe ivonescimab as investigational and unapproved in Summit’s licensed territories, including the United States and Europe.⁠[24]

$2 Billion Equity Investment Closes

AstraZeneca completed a $2 billion equity investment in Summit to support ivonescimab development and business growth. The corporate financing was distinct from Duggan’s personal wealth.⁠[25]
