Key facts

project origins and first customer

Zeno Rocha and Bu Kinoshita started the email-development project in August 2022 and gained their first paying customer in September. Accepted into Y Combinator in November for its W23 batch, they publicly launched the open-source React Email component library in December.[1]

incorporation and public launch

The company was incorporated in January 2023, with Jonni Lundy joining the founding team to run operations. Its current company profile names Rocha, Kinoshita and Lundy as the three founders. Resend opened to the public in June after a waitlist phase.[1][2]

$3 million seed announcement

Resend announced a $3 million seed round backed by Y Combinator, SV Angel and founders of companies including Figma, Vercel and Supabase. The announcement reported about 10,000 developers and more than seven million transactional emails sent through the platform at that time.[3]

a16z-led Series A

The company announced an $18 million Series A led by a16z, with returning investors including Y Combinator and Basecase. Resend reported more than 200,000 developer users and over 300,000 weekly React Email downloads, and planned to expand its developer-focused email infrastructure.[4]

acquisition of Mergent

Resend announced its acquisition of background-job service Mergent, with founder James Martinez joining the team. Mergent had participated in Y Combinator S21, and Resend already used it for domain-verification jobs. The announcement emphasized reliability, scalability and developer experience, and provided a 90-day transition period for the existing service.[5]

acquisition of Briefer

Resend acquired Briefer, a collaborative data-analysis workspace combining SQL and Python, with founders Lucas da Costa and Lucas Vieira joining. Briefer had participated in Y Combinator S23. Resend said the team would strengthen its data capabilities and announced plans to open-source the enterprise code after the hosted-service transition.[6]

Automations launch

Automations connects application events to email workflows through triggers, delays and conditional steps for onboarding, re-engagement and other lifecycle messaging. Workflows can be built visually or with AI assistance and operated through APIs, SDKs, MCP or the command line, with execution history available for inspection.[7]

three million users reported

Resend reported three million users, up from one million six months earlier, while its team grew from 25 to 43 people. It described four areas of functionality—sending, receiving, broadcasting and automation—and said it had been profitable since 2025. These operating figures were company-reported.[8]

headless dashboard initiative

Resend introduced its Headless Dashboard Initiative to expose more dashboard actions through APIs, MCP and its CLI. Examples included email metrics, webhook-event replay, broadcast cancellation, automation duplication and email-sharing links. The announcement set an ongoing interface-coverage goal rather than claiming every dashboard function was already available.[9]

Topics: email platform and React Email

Resend offers HTTP APIs, SMTP and language SDKs for transactional and marketing email, with React Email components for composing messages. Its platform supports contacts, broadcasts and webhooks for events such as delivery, bounces, opens and clicks. Authentication, domain configuration and delivery outcomes remain operational concerns for each sender.[10]

Topics: organization and public resources

Resend operates as a distributed remote team and publishes a handbook describing its working practices and product history. Its brand resources provide original identification assets; this entry uses the official black wordmark.[2][11]
