Key facts

company founded

James Hawkins and Tim Glaser founded PostHog on January 23, 2020, and participated in Y Combinator W20. After exploring other developer-tool ideas, they focused on open-source analytics that would give engineering teams control of their product-usage data.[1][2]

open-source launch

The team launched an early version through Hacker News in February 2020. Later that year, the company reported more than 3,000 deployments since launch, while its initial analytics offering expanded to feature flags, session replay and plugins.[1][3]

seed and Series A disclosure

PostHog announced $12 million in total funding: a $3 million seed round completed in March 2020 and a $9 million Series A completed in July, led by GV and Y Combinator Continuity. The headline total referred to both rounds rather than the Series A alone.[3]

$15 million Series B

The company announced a $15 million Series B led by Y Combinator Continuity and GV, with Ali Rowghani joining its board. The financing supported engineering-team expansion and product capabilities for larger deployments.[4]

self-hosting strategy and data warehouse

PostHog ended paid self-hosting support in 2023 and concentrated on open-source software and cloud services. That year, it also began building a data warehouse to combine product-usage information with other business data.[1]

Stripe-led Series D

PostHog announced $70 million in primary financing at a $920 million valuation, led by Stripe with participation from Y Combinator, GV and Formus. It separately described employee liquidity arrangements and an earlier roughly $10 million Series C. Its product expansion included a data warehouse, error tracking, LLM observability and a customer data platform.[5]

Peak XV-led Series E

The company announced a $75 million Series E at a $1.4 billion valuation, led by Peak XV Partners with existing investors participating. It described a direction in which AI would move from analyzing behavior toward proposing product changes and generating code; these were development goals rather than a claim that every capability had shipped.[6]

development-tool beta

PostHog released the beta of PostHog Code, subsequently renamed PostHog Desktop. It combines product data, repositories and coding agents to identify issues, investigate causes and produce changes for developer review. The launch article explicitly stated that the product was not yet fully self-driving.[7]

Topics: analytics, experimentation and data platform

PostHog’s suite includes product analytics, session replay, heatmaps, feature flags, A/B testing, surveys, error tracking and logs. Its data warehouse and customer data platform connect and process business data, while AI tools help teams query information, understand behavior and investigate product issues.[8][2]

Topics: licensing and self-hosting limits

Most code in the main repository is under the MIT license, while enterprise functionality in the ee directory has separate licensing. Official self-hosting remains available without paid support or operational guarantees, leaving deployment and maintenance to users. Some paid features are available only in the cloud service.[8][9]

Topics: how PostHog Desktop works

As of October 2026, the PostHog Desktop website still labels the product beta. It brings data investigation and code changes into one workspace and supports coding agents including Claude Code and Codex. Developers can begin from tasks or product signals, generate changes and review the code and results; some automated-research capabilities carry a separate alpha label.[10]
