Nomura
Nomura is a Tokyo-based financial services group whose parent is Nomura Holdings, Inc. Originating in Nomura Securities, established in 1925, it adopted a holding company structure in 2001. Its Wealth Management, Investment Management, Wholesale and Banking divisions provide securities trading, financing, investment and trust services.

1925Founding of Nomura Securities
1927–1981Building an International Network
Nomura opened a New York representative office in 1927. Its international expansion continued with control of its Hong Kong operation in 1967, a US broker-dealer in 1969 and a UK company in 1981.[1]
2001Holding Company Reorganization and NYSE Listing
In October 2001, Nomura adopted a holding company structure. The existing company became Nomura Holdings, Inc., and a wholly owned subsidiary, Nomura Securities Co., Ltd., took over securities operations. A New York Stock Exchange listing followed in December. In 2003, a board committee system separated management oversight from business execution.[1][3]
2008Taking Over Selected Lehman Operations
During the financial crisis, Nomura took on Lehman personnel and selected operations in Asia Pacific, Europe and the Middle East, together with technology and operations service companies in India. Its historical account records more than 8,000 additional employees and a larger wholesale platform. The transaction did not acquire Lehman Brothers as a whole.[4]
2016Restructuring European Equities
Nomura reassessed its global platform amid integration costs and changes in European markets. Its historical account identifies a 2016 exit from the European equities business as part of a broader effort to streamline Wholesale.[4]
2021Disclosure of Losses on US Client Transactions
Nomura disclosed a ¥245.7 billion loss in its consolidated results for the year ended March 31, 2021 from transactions with a US client. At the time, it expected approximately $570 million of further losses in the following fiscal year and said more than 97% of the related positions had been unwound. The release did not name the client.[5]
2023Unifying the NOMURA Wordmark
Nomura Securities announced a move toward a common NOMURA wordmark across the group ahead of its 2025 centenary. Its website adopted the design on April 3, 2023, with other publicity materials transitioning in stages.[6]
2024Administrative Penalty Over JGB Futures Manipulation
On September 25, 2024, Japan’s securities watchdog recommended a ¥21.76 million administrative penalty against Nomura Securities for layering in ten-year JGB futures on the Osaka Exchange on March 9, 2021. At a November 1, 2024 press conference, the finance minister confirmed payment the previous day and publication of measures to prevent recurrence by the group and securities company.[7][8]
2025Completing the Macquarie Public Investments Acquisition
Macquarie completed the sale of its North American and European public investments business to Nomura for A$2.8 billion, subject to final closing adjustments. The acquired equity, fixed-income and multi-asset business managed approximately A$254 billion at October 31, 2025. Macquarie retained Australian public investments and its global private markets business.[9]
2026Full-Year Results to March 31
In its April 24, 2026 results release, Nomura reported net revenue of ¥2.1677 trillion and net income attributable to Nomura Holdings shareholders of ¥362.1 billion for the year ended March 31, 2026, up 15% and 6% respectively. These figures came from the then-issued unaudited results release.[10]
2026First-Quarter Results to June 30
For April–June 2026, Nomura reported ¥686.7 billion in net revenue, ¥211.5 billion in pretax income and ¥145.6 billion in net income attributable to shareholders. Annualized return on equity was 15.4%. Investment Management ended the period with ¥156.4 trillion in assets under management, a measure of client investment assets.[11]
2026Strategic Investment in Capitolis
Nomura joined Capitolis’ 2026 Series E as a new strategic equity investor.[12]
Business: Four Divisions and Group Structure
Nomura serves clients through Wealth Management, Investment Management, Wholesale and Banking. Securities activities include brokerage, underwriting and capital raising. Wholesale comprises Global Markets and Investment Banking; investment management is conducted through businesses including Nomura Asset Management, while Banking includes Nomura Trust and Banking. Its 2026 results release identifies Kentaro Okuda as president and group CEO.[13][10]
