Early Life: Music, Consulting, and Aviary

Mignano is originally from New York, studied computer science, and coded professionally after graduating. He worked at the consulting firm Accenture and the record label Atlantic Records, then served as vice president of product at the photo-editing platform Aviary, which he says he grew to more than 100 million creators before Adobe acquired it in 2014. He has played the drums since grade school and has performed at venues including Bowery Ballroom and the Warped Tour.[1][1][1][1][1]

Co-Founds Anchor with Nir Zicherman

In 2015, while working at Adobe, Mignano bonded with colleague Nir Zicherman over a shared love of podcasts. Inspired by the success of Serial and other shows, the two tried to make their own podcasts but were put off by complicated software, expensive hardware, and cumbersome hosting and distribution, so they founded Anchor with a mission to democratize audio. Mignano persuaded his former bosses at Aviary and Adobe to invest, and before its sale Anchor raised $14.4 million from investors including Homebrew, GV, Accel, Betaworks, and Eniac Ventures.[2][3][2][2][3][4]

Spring 2017: A Growth Push Before Fundraising and the Shift to RSS Distribution

Mignano recalled that in the spring of 2017, about a year after Anchor launched, the product had not found product-market fit, growth had stalled, and the company would probably run out of money if it could not raise a Series A that fall. The team set a goal of 10% week-over-week growth in weekly active users for three months; to get there, Anchor dropped its principle that content could only be created and consumed inside the Anchor app and within weeks shipped an RSS delivery engine that let users publish audio to all major podcast platforms with one tap. He said the feature changed the company’s trajectory, bringing product-market fit and meeting the growth goal.[2][2][2][2][2]
