Early Life: Birth and Education

Döpfner was born in 1963 and studied musicology, German, and theatrical arts in Frankfurt and Boston.⁠[1][2]

Entering Journalism

In 1982, Döpfner began working as a journalist at the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. From 1988 to 1990, he was director of a PR agency; in 1992, he worked on the staff of the international director of the Gruner + Jahr publishing company in Paris, and later became assistant to the CEO of Gruner + Jahr in Hamburg.⁠[1][3][1][1]

Newspaper Editor-in-Chief

From 1994 to 1996, Döpfner was editor-in-chief of Wochenpost in Berlin, and from 1996 to 1998, editor-in-chief of Hamburger Morgenpost.⁠[1]

Joining Axel Springer as Editor-in-Chief of WELT

In 1998, Döpfner joined Axel Springer as editor-in-chief of Die Welt, a post he held until 2000.⁠[3][2]

Joining the Executive Board

On January 1, 2000, Döpfner stepped down as editor-in-chief of WELT and became a member of Axel Springer’s Executive Board; from July of that year he was also responsible for the Multimedia Division, and later that year he also took charge of the Newspapers Division. In February 2000, after returning from the World Economic Forum in Davos, he wrote in a commentary for WELT that the three most important topics at that year’s forum were “first, the internet; second, the internet; third, the internet.”⁠[4][4][1][4][5]

Becoming CEO of Axel Springer

In January 2002, Döpfner became Chief Executive Officer (chairman of the Executive Board) of Axel Springer. Together with Friede Springer, he reorganized the company and committed fully to future technologies; under his leadership, the company introduced paid content models and diversified its revenue streams through strategic investments, and later built a portfolio in the United States through POLITICO, BUSINESS INSIDER, MORNING BREW, and Emarketer. Looking back in 2024, he said that in 2002 Axel Springer was a loss-making German newspaper and magazine publisher.⁠[1][4][5][3][5][6]

Board Memberships

Döpfner was a director of Time Warner from 2006 to 2018; he has been a director of Warner Music Group since May 1, 2014; he was a director of Vodafone Group from 2015 to 2018; and he has been an independent director of Netflix since 2018. In 2010, he was a Visiting Professor in media at St. John’s College, University of Cambridge.⁠[2][3][2][2]

Elected President of the Federation of German Newspaper Publishers

On July 7, 2016, Döpfner was elected President of the Federation of German Newspaper Publishers (BDZV), serving until 2022.⁠[4]

Hosting a Podcast Interview With Alex Karp

On January 23 and 24, 2019, Döpfner served as host of Axel Springer’s podcast inside.pod for a two-part interview with Alex Karp, co-founder and CEO of Palantir and then a member of Axel Springer’s Supervisory Board, covering topics including artificial intelligence, the role of China, total transparency, and the question of who data belongs to in the digital world.⁠[7][7][7][7]

Investment Agreement With KKR

On June 12, 2019, Axel Springer signed an investor agreement with KKR and investment entities controlled by Friede Springer and Döpfner respectively, and the KKR side announced its intention to launch a voluntary public tender offer to all shareholders. When the agreement was signed, Döpfner held 2.8% of the company’s shares, and he and Friede Springer, who held 42.6%, both agreed to retain their holdings; he said the strategic partnership with KKR would provide additional financial capabilities, enabling the company to pursue major growth opportunities while relieving the mere focus on short-term financial targets.⁠[8][8][8][8]

Becoming Friede Springer’s Successor

On September 24, 2020, Friede Springer named Döpfner as her successor: Döpfner purchased about 4.1% of the shares from the Friede Springer Foundation and was to receive about 15% more through an envisaged gift from Friede Springer, which together with his existing stake of just under 3% would give him about 22% of Axel Springer; Friede Springer also announced that the voting rights of her remaining shares would in future be exercised by Döpfner.⁠[9][9][9][9]

Announcing a Split and a Contract Renewal

On September 19, 2024, Döpfner announced a proposed split in a letter to employees: KKR and CPP Investments would acquire majority stakes in the classifieds businesses, while the remaining businesses, including BILD, Business Insider, POLITICO, and WELT, would stay with Axel Springer SE, of which he and Friede Springer would together hold close to 98%. He said he would sign a new five-year contract and remain Chairman of a new Executive Board. After the new structure took effect on April 29, 2025, he and Friede Springer together held 95% of the company’s shares.⁠[6][6][6][10][10]

Completing the Acquisition of The Telegraph

On June 30, 2026, Axel Springer completed its acquisition of the UK’s Telegraph Media Group. Döpfner said the company was founded in 1946 under a British press license, and that THE TELEGRAPH had always been the company’s “North Star.”⁠[11][11]

As of the first half of 2026, Döpfner was an independent director of Netflix (member of the compensation committee) and a director of Warner Music Group (member of the compensation committee); as of July 2025, he was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Axel Springer Schweiz AG.
