Key facts

founded as Leya in Stockholm

Legora began as Leya in 2023, founded by Max Junestrand, Sigge Labor and August Erséus. The team explored language models for Swedish legal material and worked with lawyers from a conference room at Mannheimer Swartling. The company subsequently joined Y Combinator’s Winter 2024 batch.[1][2][3]

$10.5 million seed financing

Leya announced a $10.5 million seed round led by Benchmark in May. Investor Wayfinder’s company profile and Y Combinator’s news record document this early financing. The product combined firms’ internal knowledge with external laws, cases and regulatory information to provide source-linked answers for legal work.[1][3]

$25 million Series A

Leya announced a $25 million Series A led by Redpoint, with Benchmark, Y Combinator, Wayfinder Ventures and Alt Capital participating. Redpoint’s Jacob Effron and Logan Bartlett joined the board. The company positioned its product as a workspace connecting firm documents, templates, playbooks and public legal information.[2]

rebrand to Legora

The company changed its name from Leya to Legora while announcing agentic web research, a Microsoft Word add-in and collaboration features for Tabular Review. The add-in supports questions, playbooks and edits within documents; tabular review supports large document sets, parallel prompts and teamwork. The rebrand continued the existing company and product.[4]

$80 million Series B

Legora raised an $80 million Series B at a $675 million valuation, led by ICONIQ and General Catalyst with continued participation from Redpoint, Benchmark and Y Combinator. The company then reported 250 law firms and legal teams across 20 markets, around 100 employees and operations centered on New York, London and Stockholm.[5]

$150 million Series C

Legora announced a $150 million Series C at a $1.8 billion valuation, led by Bessemer Venture Partners with participation from existing investors. It reported more than 400 customers across 40 markets and around 200 employees. The financing supported product development, customer support and international expansion.[6]

$550 million Series D and US expansion

Legora announced a $550 million Series D led by Accel at a $5.55 billion valuation. New investors included Menlo Ventures, Bain Capital, Firstmark and Salesforce Ventures, alongside returning backers. The company planned to strengthen its US business and expand teams in locations including Houston and Chicago; future hiring targets in the release were expansion plans.[7]

Series D expanded to $600 million

expanded legal research infrastructure

Legora announced expanded legal data, an ontology of legal relationships and an AI-native citator. Using technology from its Qura and Wexler acquisitions, it structures legal text for agent retrieval and use, including authority, temporal validity and citation relationships, with attorney-editor quality control. The ontology was in limited beta, with general availability planned for the fourth quarter; the announcement did not establish that full release had occurred.[10]

Skills launched

Legora launched Skills, allowing teams to save review standards, processes and writing preferences as editable natural-language instructions with templates and examples. Agents can invoke installed skills when relevant, and the company supplied more than 250 ready-made skills. Organization-wide sharing is governed by administrator permissions, while matter-level data access restrictions continue to apply.[11]

recurring revenue and customer adoption

A founder interview published by Bessemer reported that Legora reached $100 million in annual recurring revenue roughly 18 months after launch and $200 million less than six months later. It also described legal engineers supporting customer adoption and a shift from seat-based to consumption-based pricing. These company and investor disclosures are operating metrics, not audited annual revenue.[12]

BMW legal-team deployment

Legora announced a rollout across BMW Group’s in-house legal team for research, litigation support, contract review, regulatory monitoring and first drafts, subject to BMW’s access, security and governance requirements. The release reported more than 130,000 legal professionals at over 2,000 law firms and legal teams across more than 80 markets, representing company figures at that date.[13]

Topics: platform and data governance

Legora organizes document review, research, drafting and collaboration through a legal workspace and agent system, including Word, Outlook, tabular review and workflow components. Its security documentation says customer data is not used to train or fine-tune AI models, and describes encryption, single sign-on, retention controls and customer-managed keys. Availability depends on contracts and product packages, and legal conclusions still require professional review.[14][15][10]
