Larva Labs

Overview

Larva Labs comprises Matt Hall and John Watkinson, whose work spans software development and art. Its projects progress from pixel portraits and fully on-chain generative images to three-dimensional voxel characters and compositions incorporating their own code: CryptoPunks, Autoglyphs, Meebits and Quine.[1][2]

Key facts

Creative Partnership Established

The founders met as computer-science students in the 1990s, continued collaborating after graduation, and established Larva Labs in 2005. Early work included T-Mobile Sidekick applications, followed by Android and iOS software and client projects for companies including Google and Microsoft.[1][3]

CryptoPunks Launched

CryptoPunks consists of 10,000 algorithmically generated 24×24-pixel characters, including humans, apes, zombies and aliens. Ethereum contracts record ownership and trading. Initially free to claim apart from network fees, the project combined collectible portraits with an integrated marketplace and online identity.[4][5]

Autoglyphs Launched

Autoglyphs embeds its generator in an Ethereum smart contract, producing artworks when collectors mint them. Limited to 512 works, it records the generated images as text in transaction events. The creators report an initial charge of 0.2 ETH per work, with proceeds donated to climate organization 350.org.[2][6]

Meebits Introduces 3D Characters

MeebitsMeebitsMeebits is a collection of 20,000 generative 3D voxel characters and Ethereum NFTs launched by Larva Labs in 2021. Created by Matt Hall and John Watkinson, its intellectual property passed to Yuga Labs in 2022 and The Meebit Company (MeebCo) in 2025. Character files support 3D creation, virtual worlds and physical production.Open the full entry extended the studio’s avatar work from pixels to voxels with 20,000 generative 3D characters. Each included files for use in 3D tools or virtual worlds. Its contract marketplace supported bundled exchanges of characters and ETH, although Larva Labs later acknowledged that larger NFT platforms attracted more activity.[7]

Two Projects’ Intellectual Property Sold

Larva Labs announced Yuga Labs’ acquisition of the CryptoPunks and Meebits intellectual property and most developer-held tokens. Transaction counsel subsequently specified 423 CryptoPunks and 1,711 Meebits. The founders explicitly stated that Larva Labs itself was not acquired and that they retained Autoglyphs and selected tokens.[8][9]

Centre Pompidou Collection Announcement

The Centre Pompidou announced a group of blockchain-related acquisitions spanning 18 projects by 13 artists, including Larva Labs. Its article confirmed the donated CryptoPunk #110 and discussed Autoglyphs in the context of instruction-based and computational art.[10]

Whitney Acquires Autoglyph #115

The Whitney Museum of American Art acquired Autoglyph #115 as a gift from the artist, accession number 2024.16. It classifies the work as digital art and describes its medium as generative digital art hosted on Ethereum.[11]

Meebits Moves to MeebCo

The Meebit Company, or MeebCo, acquired Meebits from Yuga Labs. Its website describes plans spanning physical and digital products, art and community. Larva Labs remains the original creator, while subsequent operations belong to a different organization.[7][12]

CryptoPunks Acquired by NODE

The nonprofit Infinite Node Foundation acquired the full CryptoPunks intellectual property and formed an advisory board comprising Larva Labs’ Matt Hall and John Watkinson, Yuga Labs’ Wylie Aronow, and Art Blocks’ Erick Calderon.[5]

Quine Released

Larva Labs released Quine on Art Blocks, a fixed edition of 497 works and the concluding Curated project. Its images incorporate their own source code. Some reproduce themselves exactly; others cycle through related outputs before returning to the original, making code both medium and subject.[13][14]

Eight CryptoPunks Enter MoMA

NODE’s project timeline records MoMA’s acquisition of eight CryptoPunks in December 2025. The museum’s Punk #4018 record credits Larva Labs, lists accession number 426.2025 and donor Ryan Zurrer, 1OF1 AG, and assigns the work to Media and Performance.[5][15]

NODE’s 10,000 Exhibition

NODE opened its permanent Palo Alto space with 10,000, presenting CryptoPunks as a continuing artistic system and foregrounding offers, bids, sales and transfers. The exhibition extends the preservation and study of the project originally created by Larva Labs.[5]

Unified Catalog Launched

Larva Labs launched a unified catalog with searches by project attributes, wallet address or ENS name, consolidating documentation for editioned works including Protoglyph, Voxelglyph and I ♥ LA. It also provides source and derivative files, instructions for retrieving on-chain data, and complete transaction ledgers for collectors, researchers and institutions.[16]

Creative Practice and Archives

Larva Labs treats code as an artistic medium and publishes source files, derivatives, catalog records, on-chain histories and checksums to support preservation. Its projects use different generation and storage methods; ownership records, artwork files and project intellectual property are distinct aspects.[1][6][8]
