Key facts

Early Life and University Education

He moved from South Africa to Canada as a young adult. In a 2016 interview, he recalled learning hiring, sales and customer service through a student house-painting business. Queen’s alumni magazine identifies him as a 1995 commerce graduate; Tesla’s filing specifies a Bachelor of Commerce.[3][4][2]

Co-founding Zip2

In 1995, he and his brother Elon Musk founded Zip2, bringing maps and local business information online through newspaper partnerships. Kimbal recalled that Elon led technology while he concentrated on product, sales, marketing and fundraising.[3]

The Sale of Zip2

Compaq acquired Zip2 for approximately $307 million in 1999. That figure represents the company transaction, not Kimbal’s personal proceeds. He subsequently pursued culinary training in New York.[4]

Culinary School and Relief Cooking

He completed his studies at New York’s French Culinary Institute in 2001. After the September 11 attacks, he spent about six weeks cooking for firefighters, an experience he associated with the community-building role of shared meals.[5]

SpaceX Director

Tesla’s biography records his SpaceX directorship from 2002 until January 2022, a historical rather than current position.[1]

The Kitchen

In 2004, he opened The Kitchen in Boulder, Colorado, with Hugo Matheson and Jen Lewin. Local sourcing and communal dining informed the restaurant and subsequent ventures at different price points.[5]

Tesla Director

He joined Tesla’s board in April 2004. The company’s 2026 filing classified him as non-independent because of his relationship to Elon Musk.[2]

OneRiot

He became CEO of advertising-technology company OneRiot in 2006; Walmart acquired it in 2011.[1]

A Change of Focus

In a 2017 World Economic Forum interview, he recalled a serious neck injury during a 2010 snow-tubing accident. He described recovery as a reason to devote more attention to food and community projects.[6]

Big Green and Food Education

Big Green dates its work from 2011. Musk promoted school gardens and food education, emphasizing children’s participation in growing food and understanding its origins.[7][6]

Chipotle Director

He served on Chipotle Mexican Grill’s board from 2013 to 2019.[1]

Square Roots

On August 23, 2016, he announced Square Roots with co-founder Tobias Peggs. Its initial model combined urban container-based hydroponic farms with agricultural and entrepreneurial training; the first Brooklyn program was then being prepared.[8]

Social Entrepreneurship Recognition

In March 2017, the Schwab Foundation named Musk among its Social Entrepreneurs of the Year, citing local restaurant sourcing, school Learning Gardens and urban farming entrepreneurship.[9]

A Restaurant-Loan Dispute with Elon

Isaacson’s biography recounts an October 2018 dispute after Elon reconsidered a restaurant loan. He eventually provided $5 million; Kimbal said they stopped speaking for six weeks before reconciling.[10]

Employee Relief-Fund Dispute

After pandemic closures, laid-off employees criticized their exclusion from The Kitchen’s relief fund. In April 2020, Musk acknowledged communication and design problems to 5280. Revised rules allowed roughly 100 laid-off workers to apply for grants capped at $400; eligibility did not guarantee an award.[11]

Nova Sky Stories

Musk founded drone-performance venture Nova Sky Stories in 2022, describing a 2021 desert arts event as inspiration for combining illuminated drones, software and artistic storytelling. Its development included acquiring Intel’s drone-light-show division.[12][13]

Jeffrey Katzenberg Joins Nova

An August 22, 2025 joint interview announced Jeffrey Katzenberg as a Nova investor, board member and strategic adviser. They outlined family entertainment built around original characters and stories; large stadium shows remained an ambition rather than an established scale of operations.[13]

Stepping Back from Big Green

On October 22, 2025, he announced that he was stepping back from Big Green’s daily operations to concentrate on Nova. His statement identified Wendy Lea as board chair and Madeleine Nelson as president, roles also listed on the organization’s current team page.[14][15]

Leaving Burning Man’s Board

The San Francisco Standard reported, citing the organizer, that Musk joined Burning Man’s board in 2021 and declined another term in January 2026 because of other commitments. His departure preceded the subsequent Epstein document release.[16]

Tesla Director-Compensation Litigation Disclosure

Tesla disclosed that director-compensation litigation settled in 2023 without admission of wrongdoing. In January 2026, Delaware’s Supreme Court upheld settlement approval and reduced attorneys’ fees; this was not a judgment of personal illegality.[2]

Epstein Documents and His Response

Released Epstein correspondence drew attention to Musk’s contacts. Boulder Reporting Lab examined communications and invitations and reported that those materials did not establish that he had visited Epstein’s private island.[17]

On February 9, Musk said a friend, rather than Epstein, introduced his 2012 partner. He stated that he met Epstein once during daytime in New York and denied visiting the island. These are his public assertions.[18]

Congressional Democratic Staff Report

A May 12 interim report by House Oversight Democratic staff stated that 2012 emails showed Epstein and Boris Nikolic facilitating the introduction and receiving Musk’s thanks, conflicting with his February account. It also recorded a survivor’s statement that Epstein compelled her to see his friends, without identifying any men. The report was not a judicial finding of wrongdoing by Musk.[19]

Selling the Colorado Restaurants

On October 6, 2026, 5280 reported that Bryan Dayton’s Half Eaten Cookie Hospitality had acquired The Kitchen restaurants in Boulder and Denver. The Austin restaurant was excluded, so the transaction did not establish a sale of every business under the brand.[20]

Development of the Farming Venture

Square Roots’ current website describes facilities, software and operational support for business customers, alongside research and food-security applications. This scope extends beyond the urban container-farm entrepreneurship program announced in 2016.[21][8]
