In October 2014, USV led the Series A round of eShares, an equity management software company. Buttrick wrote that USV held equity in more than 50 companies and that most portfolio companies still managed their cap tables in spreadsheets and communicated them by email, a slow and error-prone process. eShares later rolled out 409A valuation services and was renamed Carta in the fourth quarter of 2017.[8][9][9][9][8][8]

Buttrick wrote that the USV 2016 fund would close its first investment that week; the fund had $175 million in capital commitments, the same size as the 2014 fund, and was USV’s fifth early-stage fund, managed by five investing partners: Brad BurnhamBrad BurnhamBrad Burnham is an American venture capitalist who co-founded the New York venture capital firm Union Square Ventures (USV) with Fred Wilson in 2003, after working at AT&T and its venture capital arm and co-founding the ad technology company TACODA; he has long publicly advocated net neutrality and opposed the abuse of software patents. Leading PayJoy’s Series A

USV led PayJoy’s Series A round. The company offers smartphone financing to consumers with little or no credit history, financing 70% to 80% of a phone’s price over 3 to 12 months; if customers fail to pay after multiple notices, the phone is locked until payment is received.[11][11][11]

Joint Endorsement of Hillary Clinton

Investing in Latin American Fintech

Buttrick wrote that USV had long focused mainly on companies in North America and Europe, and that in 2020 it led the Series A of alt.bank, based in São Paulo, Brazil, which serves the roughly 100 million underbanked or unbanked adults in Brazil; since the onset of COVID, USV had made more than a dozen investments without meeting teams face to face.
