Indian Creek Island

Indian Creek Island is a man-made barrier island in Biscayne Bay in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The entire island makes up the incorporated municipality of Indian Creek Village and consists mainly of private waterfront homes and the private golf club Indian Creek Country Club. The island is commonly known as the “Billionaire Bunker.”

Founding of Indian Creek Country Club

In 1929, the private Indian Creek Country Club was founded, centered on an 18-hole golf course and clubhouse, and it occupies the vast majority of the island’s land. The club is invitation-only, and owning property on the island does not make someone a member.⁠[1][1][1][1]

Development During the Great Depression

During the Great Depression of the 1930s, a group of Midwestern millionaires began developing the muck-covered island into an exclusive residential enclave.⁠[2]

Incorporation as Indian Creek Village

In May 1939, the island was incorporated as the municipality of Indian Creek Village, one of the incorporated municipalities of Miami-Dade County.⁠[3][2]

41 Platted Residential Sites

As of 2017, the island had 41 platted waterfront residential home sites owned by 36 property owners, with 29 estate homes; there were no municipal owned lands or publicly dedicated rights-of-way on the island.⁠[2][2]

Tom Brady Buys a Home

In 2020, Tom Brady and his then-wife, supermodel Gisele Bündchen, bought a house on the island for $17 million.⁠[2]

Jeff Bezos Buys Three Properties

Jeff Bezos began buying on the island in 2023: he paid $68 million for his first property in 2023, later bought the roughly 19,000-square-foot home next door for $79 million, and added a third property in 2024 for $87 million, for a combined total of about $234 million. As of August 2026, Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, were still not members of Indian Creek Country Club.⁠[1][1][1][4][1]

Geography and Access

The island lies in northeastern Miami-Dade County and covers about 0.46 square miles; according to the U.S. Census Bureau Gazetteer, it has 0.428 square miles of land and 0.04 square miles of water. The island consists of waterfront estates and Indian Creek Country Club, is connected to the Town of Surfside only by a 60-foot-wide bridge, and its only road is a 1.6-mile private two-lane roadway.⁠[5][5][6][2]

Municipal Government and Public Safety

Indian Creek Village is a primarily residential incorporated municipality governed by a mayor and village council, with its own administrative services and public safety operations; as of October 2026, the mayor was Bernard Klepach. The village police department is responsible for protecting the island’s residents, visitors, and infrastructure while preserving the community’s privacy.⁠[7][7][7][8][5]

Other Notable Property Owners

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg paid $170 million for an unfinished estate on the island; Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump bought land on the island and later expanded their holdings. As of August 2026, Zuckerberg and the Kushners likewise had not been admitted to Indian Creek Country Club.⁠[1][1][1]
